So does having an accident at 18 really affect insurance?

Most of you are aware of my accident. I just went to do some insurance quotes and filled it out as if I'd had an accident with £2,000 worth of total damage claims.

It was £1,500 for me on an Audi A3 1.8T and is now £1,650
It's also now £900 for me on my mum's MK5 1.4 Golf when 6 months ago I was getting quotes of like £1,600.

In both cases the main driver is myself (1.4 years driving experience, 0 NCB) and both my parents are named drivers. I'm aware the quotes seem very cheap for someone my age but it must be our postcode, my occupation as "Uni away" and other factors (perhaps because my dad is in medicine or something) as my mates can't get quotes anywhere near that.

So it's not as bad as I thought and there's still a chance the accident will go 50:50 and I won't claim, but please DO NOT talk about the accident. Thank you.

Cheers

it depends on individual for a friend who had a claim it all but nearly doubled his premium but i suppose our insurance is such extortion (sp) to begin with that it cant really go much higher :P

what was the accident :P ? sorry I didnt read it in the first place, and it depends on individual for a friend who had a claim it all but nearly doubled his premium

I do not want to bring this up again as it got heated last time but basically it involved a drunk passenger opening a door of a parked car on me as I was driving past. That's all I'm saying. I will post a new thread when I heard back from the insurance companies. I doubt the total cost will exceed £2,000 though.

Doesn't affect your insuance too much I had a crash at 19 didn't stop me getting insurance for a supra a year later. I played around with the quotes and found that getting 3 points for speeding would have been worse than a crash:confused:

It's ironic that the 3 points does more damage actually, given the guy involved in my accident should have been given points for breaking 2 major highway code rules.

Still, accidents are accidents. Speeding shows you're a boy racer, although I admit the whole thing is a bit crap as being done for 35mph in a 30mph is harsh.

It didn't affect my premium THAT much, what it did do was limit my choice of insurers down to practically one...but they give good quotes so not the end of the world.

This is my insurance history:
18 0NCB 0 Accidents - Honda Civic Sport, Group 6 - £1600
18 0NCB 1 Accident - Fiesta ST, Group 13 - £1600 (had one years driving which helped..)
19 1NCB 1 Accident - As above - £1150
20 2NCB 1 Accident - Clio 197, group 15 - £975

Now I expect I could have gotten far lower quotes but as you can see they aren't actually that bad at all for my age and accident history. If you get yourself insured with someone like bell (who I'm with) and get 10month bonus accellerator policy your NCB soon builds back up, so then (touch wood) come next year when I turn 21 and some insurers won't ask for claims past 3 years, I'll have no accidents to my name and 3 years NCB so I'll be practically in the same situation had I not been in an accident.

I had a small accident when I was 18 (clipped a Transit van) and unfortunately it made a huge difference to my next premium.

Iv had a crash and a sp30 when i was 19, i would say it is still effecting me (22 now). The worst part was loosing my NCB. I was getting quoted less than £700 for my mr2 turbo when it was going to get re-newed, but cos of the claim all the prices went back up to 1.5k+.

huge affect on mine.

with a no claims bonus my insurance would half next year  , for not earning that bonus it iwll be a good few hundred quid more than it would off

what happens if you do a quote with no accident and with 1 years no claims bonus though for your next year.

about 1200 ish ?

people were telling me that the type of accident (with exception to non fault) didn't affect the premium as it was just classified as "an accident" but i was saying that was rubbish because that'd mean that they'd classify a incident of you overtaking and hitting an oncoming car and writing both cars off, as the same as if you reversed slowly into another car in a car park and did a small amount of damage.

Surely the cost/type of accident in a claim makes a world of difference?!

I wrote off my AX 1l shortly after passing, partial blame accident so lost my NCB, my next years insurance was on a 205 1.1 and was the exact same price as the AX, so just didn't go down,

I recently got 5 points though, and Admiral at first wanted my an extra £200, on top of my £440 premium, but I somehow managed to haggle that down to a 1-off payment of £339 for the full years insurance, dunno how that works but hey :p

One thing that annoys me though, both my bike insurance and car insurance have my AX accident listed on the policies, yet it's over 3 years old so I don't have to declare it, but because it's a renewal they keep it anyway :@ :p

I had a crash when I was 17, was ment to be getting charged for the lampost the firebrigades, the ambulances and the stupit lacie that never had a seatbelt on!!

Had one letter from her solicitor, phoned my insurance and nothing. Never got charged for anything at all. Never even lost my no claims.
