Hi chaps,
I bought a 2006 (56) Golf during the summer after looking at a Focus 1.6 mk2 Gear (£5k and tatty from a dealer), a Civic 1.8 petrol (nice but tired and red light on the petrol guage on the test drive..), and a Polo sport 1.6 105 (actually very good but sold by the time we looked at the focus and civic).

Anywho, ended up spotting a Golf which I'd always thought would be higher milage/age for our £5k compared to other similar cars but this was a 2 owner, 60k, F(ish)SH for £4600. 1.6 FSI SE spec (alloys, cruise control, aircon etc).

To the point bit :p -

I can't get a straight answer as to whether the stupid thing has a cambelt or not!
The local ATS who did a full service on it say definately yes (but they can't do cambelts apparently)
The local indy VW guarage took the numberplate and say no over the phone.
A N Other guarage also say no over the phone.

Is anyone in a possition to check for certain if my model has a cambelt or camchain??

Cheers guys. :)

They have a cam chain, though problems with the chain tensioner are far from unknown which causes the chain to rattle, especially at start up.

Thanks for the quick reply Dog. I sometimes get a noise for a second or two but then dies down. Is there anything I can do or need to worry about?

OK, thanks again for looking mate. I do appreciate it. I'll check the code tomorrow.
Could you edit your reply to scratch the reg please. Don't know why but feel it would be apt!

Hi guys,
found the sticker but not sure which bit is the code - I can't see anything like the codes on the VWAudi forum linked above...

thanks again guys. Yep it does look like BLF from the pic - I'll double check in the light tomorrow.
Kind of semi releaved its a chain if it means one less thing to fork out for before xmas but with that also a bit worried about the occasional noise and something else I know even less about than cambelts!
