I have a dell 2405 but I am either gonna get a 28" or if I can get a decent second hand deal a 30".

Any one love gaming on there 30" ??. The only games I would play would be total war games so I am guessing large battles would play and work great on a large screen ?

This ^^ you will need a card like this to play games on the monitor comfortably. I've been playing games on my 32" tv for the last few weeks and I have to say its really nice, (I'm saving for the dell 30") its really imersive especially in fps. And the extra screen space helps in rts.

a 32" TV will have a much lower resolution than a 30" Monitor.

around 52% less desktop space.

i love my dell 30", i upgraded from a 24" dell monitor and the difference is very nice, i really only play FPS games but i really feel its the single est purchase i've made.

I usually play on native res but my machine is now a bit dated (sli 8800GTX C2D @ 3.0 Ghz), currently i dont have the money to throw around on new toys so on some newer games i just drop the resdown to 1920 x 1200 some people say LCD's look poor on anything but native res, i disagree to be honest

so what is it like playing games on a 32" hd tv?

I have a full hd lg @ 1920x1080.

Will this be any good to game on until I can afford a couple of 24"?

It's good for the games yes, get it at the native red and it looks good. Text is hard to read I have found, probably due to the low pixel density in relation to the screen size. Been using the pc monitors for interweb and docs.

i think some people are too power hungry these days stating a 4870x2 is the min for smooth games:confused:

i have 2 30" hazros and my spec is a old 939 4800+ o/c with a sli setup of 2 evga 8800gt ko (faster than a ati 3870x2) and i dont have any problems in running native with min 2x aa (cant tell the difference any higher than 4) and min 8x af tho i prefer 16x.

tho if by chance i had any problems id just go down to 1920x.

games played recently are:

HL2 2 episode everything on full 4x aa 16x af
call of duty 4 4xaa 16xaf
call of duty 5 2xaa 8xaf
assassin's creed
dead space everything on full

by and large yes my fps were not in the hundreds but games were all smooth, above the 50fps mark and by and large i couldnt really tell you the difference in playing at res 1920x and 2560x as games iv noticed dont tend to blur anything like text does (text has a slight haze when not at default res but its really not that bad) when not at native.

later towards the end of the year im upgrading anyway as this system was built and added to over the last 3 years and when it comes to that day the cards will be cheaper.

me id always go for the 30" although it depends on your budget (i got mine at special offer price at christmas ;) 2 for the price of 1 dell :D:D) as once you got it its a keeper compared to computer gear which is upgraded frequently and if a game does slightly struggle some where down the line you have the option to knock it down to 1920x and below whilst if you went and got a 26" or 28" your max is 1920x and below also you lose the extra 2"screen space and have to put up with a lot higher dpi making everything fonts and imagewise looking slightly blocky.

anyway the choice is yours at the end of the day as might find you like the larger font on the 28".

just my 2 cents :P

It's really subjective. Do you find your 24 inch monitor too small for gaming or general usage? One of the advantages of getting a 26 inch or 28 inch monitor is they are still 1920x1200. Which means they are more pc friendly in terms of gfx card requirements.

I played the total war demo and while I was not impressed by the game besides the sea battles it requires a lot of horsepower to run it at full settings and at a 30 inch native res.

You could as Horny Rhino suggested knock down the res of it down to 1920x1200 to get it to run better but then it would defeat the point of you getting a 30 inch monitor as you posted just for total war.

Also I have not seen any monitor while it running out of native res match the same clarity as it running at it native res.

But without you posting your setup it really difficult to say.

Like some posters say text might be difficult to read but I just use the windows feature of resizing the txt to a higher font size and it seems to work fine. When I first got mine i could barely read it and it gave me eyestrain but once I made adjustments and got use to the size of the monitor for gaming and general usage then I belive it is the right size choice for me although as some other posters have said they could not adjust to the size increase and it not for them.

I play all sorts of games from company of heroes to team fortress 2 etc and while some run better than others at native res I find it a relatively positive experience.

But apiece of friendly advice given the information you posted so far. If you buying second hand and that is far as your budget goes. Be prepared for some frustrating times ahead.

While games like valve based games like tf2 and L4d etc run suprisingly well on modest cards at native res other games in some cases are not as forgiving.

But once you find a gfx setup that works for you then it can be very rewarding. A tip go for cards which have at least 1gb of vram as that will help when AA and high res are thrown into the mix.

You might try asking in the gfx cards section as well. Their are quite a few peeps who run 30 inch monitors and various gfx card solutions to drive their monitors. I think the majority of them use 2xsingle cards in Crossfire/SLi configurations.
