I managed to order a ryzen 1700 for £206, brand new from an very large online retailer as a few days ago in a strange flash sale.

I only purchased it in a rush, in fact I ordered 2, first one with on its own, second one with a Asus prime x370 as ASUS are doing a promo for 2x top tier games when you buy a cpu and board.

total cost for board and cpu = £335.00

this is my dilemma, I am not sure I need it.

My pc currently is

Asrock z170 k6
i5 6400
16gb ddr4 3200

and
gtx 1070.

my options are

cancel all the orders and just buy a i7 7700 second hand for £160.

or sell my old board and chip, not sure how much I would get but lets say £130 for them together.

so the net total to upgrade would either be.

£205 for the r1700 + board

or

keep my old board, sell my old cpu for £80? and therefore upgrade to i7 7700 for £80.00

I am not a big gamer, I do like to photo edit and using a 40" screen with looks of windows open at once.

What would you do?

last option.. do nothing and wait till feb? ryzen+, and cheaper intel boards? if i did wait, would ryzen+ be more expensive then £207?

I would be inclined to go with this advice. Try it to see for yourself as you would be the best judge if there is an improvement.

I do a lot of photo editing, using Lightroom and DXO. DXO has there brilliant Prime noise reduction but it is also brutal on the system. Thankfully it is fully multithreaded so I use a 16 core Xeon system to crunch through my photo's maxing out all threads.

I suspect you will come across situations where those 8 cores get fully utilised.

I decided just to post one of the CPU's back as there is no profit in trying to resell one on ebay,

So I picked up a msi tomahawk for £55 from a warehouse deal.

So im sitting at £260 for motherboard and cpu..

But im still scared to build it... in case no one buys my old board and cpu
