Work has just advised a team of us that some of us will lose their jobs soon to redunancy, looks like approx 25% of will get the boot (small team of 9-10 people)

Consultation period starts today for 2 weeks, which is when the final decision will be made.

I'm sure others have had this happen to them in recent years, any first hand experiences or advices people can give?

I've been with the company now for almost 4 years, just shy by a few months.

Have they indicated how the selection process will work i.e. will there be a scoring system (based on length of employment, amount of sick days, skills assessment, etc.) or is it last in first out?

Most companies will apply the first in last out rule. This doesn’t always apply in my last company this happened to us, I didn’t lose my job but a person in the same position lost his job and they promoted the person below him into his position. Now this was because they wanted to get rid clearly of the dead weight. I don’t blame them on that decision either as that person was terrible and completely lazy.

As long as you don’t take the mick you should be fine.

How long have other been there? How well do you play "the game"?

2-3 people have been there as long or longer than me, the rest less time than me, 3-4 people in my team have been there less than a year or so, and the rest over a year but less than me.

As for playing the game probably not my thing, I don't want to make others look bad etc, but I would be happy to put forward my reasons why I think my position is important.

At the moment this is how I am thinking of playing it:

1) stay focused and keep working as hard as normal. I consider myself a pretty hard worker, I don't mess around on t'internet all day long or anything.

2) Bullet point the things I have worked on that make my position important and what I do on a day to day basis that can't be replaced and bring it to the table

Would this be a sensible thing to do? I like my job and want to keep it.

To make things a little more complex our team is split into 3 sub teams, it's my job to take care of the server monitoring in our sub team of 2 people, we also do the internal cases/problems people have, machine builds etc.

Yes they pretty much said what you said, what makes this all a bit more complicated is that I have only been in this role since the start of the year, but I have been with the company for several years before this in other roles. 3 promotions later and I am where I am now.

In the last year or more I have had zero sick days, skillswise overall I am probably at the bottom of the pile with the other person in my team though as some of the others in the group work at a higher technical level than me. My job does not require a higher skill set than what I have though

I'd assume you or your partner in the team of 2 would be going then, how long has the other been around.

As for "the game" I mean doing things in the past which give you management exposure. It's all very well working hard but unfortunately it can go completely unnoticed.

This.

Keep your head down, work very hard, put 100% in and you might show them that you're worth keeping around.

100% is for pussies, you need to get in so deep that you alienate your colleagues and become your bosses best friend, bring him a coffee, ask if there's any extra work needs doing, offer to work a few saturdays, subtly hint at colleagues who are under performing and so on. :p

Largely depends on length of service, your age and your wage, as well as any performance appraisal scores, sick days etc

Example: They'd have to pay long serving members, over 40 and with a big salary more than a new starter, aged 19 on basic rate.

I'd ready a CV in case it goes pear-shaped :(

Bad news though dude :( Since I (and a few others) left it seemed like they were bringing on more and more people, if you do stay then does that mean you'll have multiple people's tasks on your to do list?

yo Robbie,

No, as I work in my team of 2 if my other team member left I would have to work twice as hard, but if they didn't remove either of us at all then I doubt I would really be doing anything extra as it were, as our jobs are quite different, this is of course assuming they don't move some jobs around the teams.

I can and have done the job that we do in my team alone but it's hard going, there's a lot of things for one person to do and it's not easy to keep on top of everything, simple to get a bit overwhelmed really.

Extra work will always come when a team is downsizing, all with the extra joy of more stress, work for the same pay in 90% of cases. Thank the evil recession of doom for this.
