...in my local B and Q warehouse and went to the till with some superglue and a stanley knife. Lady there looked at me to make sure I was legally able to purchase such items, i assume. Thats fine...

Then she turns to me and says, "how old are you?"

Me: "Im 20, why?"

Her: "Sorry you need to be 21 to buy this knife"

Me: WTF? Isn't the legal age to buy knives etc 16? Is there any stanley knife I can buy where I don't have to be 21??!

Her: I dont know.

Then she shows me her screen and sure enough the till screen asks for confirmation that the customer is over 21.

She wouldnt sell it, so I left it and went to the Wilkinsons down the road and got one no problem...has the legal age gone up by 5 years suddenly and I missed this?

Oh and I also go ID'd for a pint of coke the other night...strange week...

Maybe store policy? IIRC i heard something about ASDA wanting to sell cigarettes to people over 18. Law is just hte minimum isnt it, stores can make it higher if they want AFAIK.

True, stores dont have to sell you anything. They can refuse any sale, although they wont unless it's extreme circumstances.

Homebase is the same with knifes and "weapons" you have to be over the age of 21.

Also local pubs and clubs around here are starting to up the drink age to 21 because the police have started an initiative to cut binge drinking/underage drinking/ general crime.

Correct mate - its this new "think 21" stuff everywhere seems to be taking up. Its that if you look under 21 you must show you are over 18.

Of course, cashiers can get the wrong idea and want proof you are 21.

Regardless, you have no "right" to buy anything in a shop, they could refuse to sell you anything for any reason at all (pretty much).

should have showed her youre willy

The above two did cross my mind, but after careful consideration I decided it would be best to leave the store and go elsewhere... ;)

Hmm sounds like this is it. But isnt 21 a bit extreme, I mean possibly 18 at a stretch...but 5 years? And if you have ID (which I did) whats the problem?

LOL at some of these comments. :D

Anyways apparently you have to look 21 to buy alcohol & fags now, Kinda defeats the whole point in the law really.

i was in tesco`s 2 months ago and they wouldnt sell me a bottle of wine. im 24  4 months before that i couldnt get into a night club :( they wouldnt accept the fact that i had credit cards on me!! my friends and i had to go else where all because of that.
