So..Ironman 2008

I love cycling, can take or leave swimming and hate running. But I can appreciate how much work that is going to be. Thats just intense, you sado-masochist!

Platypus, I used to live in Cambridge and rode with Cam CC. Incase you didnt know, they do a club ride on Sunday at 9am, starting in front of the bus car park in front of Addenbrooks hosipital. They'll have a group suited to your ability. It will be either sporting or sporting plus that you want I should imagine.

Good luck with it! :)

Yes.

Swim 2.4 Miles,
Cycle 112 Miles,
Run 26.2 Miles.

Yikes!

I'd love to do a triathlon someday, but I need to seriously work on my swimming. Last time I swam was when I was thrown off a jetski in LA in 1999!

Good luck!

This will probably be taken as a flame, but have u seen the clip of those 2 tour de france cyclists who fall off and start a punchup? Nothing manly about that imo. I mean they look like the male equivalent to a supermodel IMO, and I dont like supermodels for the most part either.

Im not against cardio, I do a 20min jog (including a couple of hill sprints) a week; but nothing which will lead to muscle depletion.

While im not saying this is easy and its not. It really isnt as hard as it probably looks. If you've run a marathon in a decent time and do some cycling then i'd say its do-able. The swim shouldnt really take much out of you physically, cycling on flat on a good bike and flat surface is reasonably pretty easy, and is just a case of getting round to the running feeling good. The run is the hardest part no doubt.

Having said that theres no way im doing it. The training would be pretty horrendous.

Where on earth did that come from?!

Running a marathon in a "decent time" is hard enough in itself. Doing it after the aforementioned run/swim, to me (as an ex 10k/half marathon nut), is simply unthinkable.

From those I know that have done a full IM thats the general concensus unless you are looking at sub'ing 10 hours. Still not easy by any stretch tho.

Aye I can do the three individual parts ok, it's putting them together thats going to be the problem.

I'm talking to a coach at the Cambridge Triathlon Club, and my physio. If they tell me not to do it I might not, but I'm 90% sure I will. Pre-registering is just the first step of course :)

Oh wow, you've done it??

How did you find it? What was the humidity like? What kind of training did you do?

Sorry - my post was probably a bit misleading. I just climbed Kinabalu last year, I'm not nearly crazy enough to race it. :)

Humidity will be a killer though - not so much on the mountain but in the jungle. Good luck!

(and watch out for the giant centipedes, they hurt like hell)

I've got a running mate who's off to Borneo next month for a weeks survival course. I'll try and get some input from him if you want.

I'll be relying on him myself for input for the jungle marathon in 2008. But it's the humidity as Volcs says. I've got my fluid/electrolyte replacement off to a fine art now, get that right and if you're physically able you should be fine - apart from the creepy crawlies.......
