So - is the 4850 faster than an 8800gts?

That's expected to be more expensive, $230ish vs $199, which, fair enough isnt huge but this is the segment where every $/£ counts. It only runs 10% quicker than a 4850 a difference you can OC your way out of. ATi also has that bonous of onboard sound, to edge the pros and cons in it's favour.

Onboard sound = always rubbish
10% quicker = actually quite a lot (obviously the 9800+ will clock too)...

Its a wash really going by the reviews\previws...both seem good.

How much more £ do you reckon the 4870 will be?
I reckon either of these should be an good boost from the aging x1800xt I'm using right now!

They (OcUK) accidentally posted the prices briefly, the cheapest was £211 for the 4870. Even the 4850 512mb is a massive improvement from an X1800 XT.

"Who's betting that the sale of 260/280's slow to a crawl"

Well, I do for one lol

Thing is this, As always i guess with new fabs and technology changes the intitial outlay must be mega so they recoup asap eg: higher cost to consumer

But, Surely nvidia can't be selling the new 200 series at a few dollars profit ?? So to me they Have Got to lower the prices or they're gonna have to release miracle drivers prolly already got em knowing how nvidia have milked everyone with past drivers

Anyways it stands to sense that they are making more than a few dollars on each card, So unless they want a very long selling time for stocks they best get a shift on and bite the bullet n start dropping prices

I agree that the sale of the 260/280's slow to a crawl

Good thing though competition, And i'm glad that ATI are still with us or else i could envisage £1k vidcards

Ciao

Ohh aint it amazing, All the nvlddmkm.sys problems with mainly 8 series cards, That nvidia said were going to fix have all of a sudden been fixed by using 200 series drivers (modded inf though but that doesn't alter the darn driver)

Me thinks they wanted me to give up on my old 8800gts and buy a gtx no sorry a ultra oops no i mean a GT no erm a GTS ahh no hmm a 9800gx2 no i meant a darn 9800gtx

Ohh i dunno whether to go and pick a pair of cards up tomorrow from the shop with a new mobo or hang on til next month grrrrr

Ohh crickey best add to the topic lol, Well from what i've read here there and about everywhere it likes AA :)

So my cards are gonna be ati this time

Ciao

Wonder what the hit is if running a P45 mobo with 2 x 8 pci-e lanes and these cards?

I don't think it would be worthwhile. I can play Bioshock quite happily with my current card in the x16 pci-e slot. However, when I was messing around tidying the case up, I tried it in a lower slot forcing the card to run at x8. At first I didn't realise but when I fired up Bioshock again it was juddering and lagging all over the place. As soon as I put the card back in the correct slot it was smooth as butter.

So I don't think it would be worth while personally, although I have no figures to back this up with. :) Just what happened to me. lol.

Couldn't find the answer in this thread, seems people were talking about the 320mb and 640mb version of the GTS. So, question:

Is it worth upgrading to one of these over a 8800 GTS 512mb (G92) ?

Ta :)

Err your board is a p35 no?

Easyrider was refering to a p45 board.

Your lower slot on the p35 board would be running at 4x, not 8x and more importantly it is pci-e 1.0

The p45 boards are pci-e 2 so double the bandwidth. Ie running at 8x on a pci-e 2 board is the same as you running at 16x in your slot 1.

bad results then but I feel there is something wrong with the p45 boards running xfire rather than the 8x been the problem.

A 4850 runs fine on a 16x pci-e 1.0 slot and hence will run fine at 8x pci-e 2.0 slot - same bandwidth.

I would have liked to have seen a single 4850 running at both 16x and 8x to see if there were no difference or the same performance hit.

I have seen better results with two 4850 running in xfire on a p35 board and hence at 16x and 4x or 8x and 2x in pci-e 2 bandwidth terms.

However, if this is a bios issue with p45 boards or a chipset issue rather thans bandwidth, it doesn;t mean that there will be a solution coming any time soon or ever.

Personally i wouldnt upgrade from a GTS. Many reviews seem to show mixed signals i have seen some where the 4850 comes out better in the majority of stuff and some where it seems to be around the same or slightly worse than 8800/9800 gtx's. Its hard too call

However if you got a bit more cash and want two in crossfire, it does look insanely powerful.

You know....
When I first read that nvidia are releasing the 9800+ in respone to ATI's first break in years, I literally felt physically sick.

You're right, I didn't pick that up. I thought he was talking about P35. Woops! :o
