So - is the 4850 faster than an 8800gts?

Yeh to be far if you don't have a corssfire motherboard then surely its cheaper to get a GX2. That way you probably will still have a higher performing set up anyway...for less.

Any reason Easy?

The GX2 is a nice card and wins in some benchies against the 4850's but the smell of new tech the improved drivers speed and cost all conclude into a great package if you have a ready mobo.

:)

I have become abit sus about NV come of late.

And the hot GT200 is a bit of a wet letuce if you ask me.

Anyhow I'm not doing anything until 4870

New/better drivers I completely agree with. Remember though it's swings and roundabouts I've come to learn.

NVIDIA also gets Physx which is pretty nice deal.

Still the 4850s is a great purchase with the right board ready to boot.

...I have better results with two 4850 running in xfire on a p35 board and hence at 16x and 4x or 8x and 2x in pci-e 2 bandwidth terms...

Greebo, could you please post this info if you have it? i'd be VERY interested to read it as i have a P35 board and am seriously considering going for Xfire when i come back to uni...

thanks

I don't understand this, are you saying a 16 x pci-e slot (1.0) is the same bandwidth as an 8 x pci-e (2.0) slot ?, surely that not right ?

Yes is is. pci-e is double the bandwidth of pci-e 1.0 or 1.1 slots

Look at wiki or google it if you don't beleive me.

Hence my beleif that it's either a chipset or bios problem with the p45 boards as essentially they are the same as two 16x pci-e slots and I haven't seen/heard any problems with that.

Pci-e 3 next year is set to double the pci-e bandwidth again ie 16 x pcie-1 = 8 x pcie-2 = 4 x pcie-3.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3338&p=14

Crisis 8800GT SLi wins by small margin
COD 4 4850 CF wins
Quake Wars, 8800GT Sli wins
Assasins Creed 8800GT Sli wins
Oblivion 4850 CF wins
the Witcher 8800GT Sli wins
Bioshock 8800GT Sli wins

so there u go...

Assasins Creed: 4850 CF wins

The wicther and bioshock it is clear crossfire isn't working (although I have seen other reviews where crossfire does work with Bioshock so may be amandtech been pants again ;)) as the score is the same for a single 4850 and xfir 4850 so you can't count them

Therefore you are left with one game, Crysis where 8800GT SLI beats 4850 CF by 1fps.

The other problem is there are lots of reviews on the internet where 4850's in xfire at 1920 x 1200 beats the GX2 into the ground, never mind two 8800GT in SLI.

I am so happy with mine , will run a 3d bench tommorow for you guys . If all you play is BF2 or Cod 4 they are perfect , got mine running at 1900x1020 and it sexy as hell , only have a P35 so no x fire for me .

that's cool man, it's not that I didn't believe you, it's just I thought that the only difference between pci-e 1.0/1.1 and 2.0 was the voltage, I didn't release that there was a difference in bandwidth also, I guess I'll be upgrading my motherboard then :(.

EDIT - just read up on it all on wiki now, intresting stuff.

I've had a gigabyte X38 DS5 mobo for a few months now (even if it is carp:rolleyes:) with an e8400 @ 3.8ghz. I'm flogging me 8800gt, slapping in a 3870, then putting a 4850 in and running xfire, eventually replacing the 3870 for another 4850. I'll see if I can get the 4850 ordered on monday.:)
