So it appears the Police are clamping down on noisy exhausts.

Also the bit about making cars louder... am I misunderstanding ? Sounds to me like any non oem exhaust is illegal?

this is what they are aiming for.

I remember getting stopped many many moons ago by a traffic copper when I had a cavalier GSi with a straight through exhaust no silencers with a side exit. all I got was its a bit loud isn't it? a quick check of the car and sent on my way, how times have changed.

"Single Vehicle Autorisation test (SVA) vehicle only not exceeding 99dB. Microphone 50cm away from tail pipe, 20cm from ground level and at 45 degrees to tail pipe. Car checked at tickover then checked 3 times at 3/4 power with no load on engine. ie 3/4 between 0 & red line"

Lulz, that's the Westfield failed then. I've lost my sound meter during the last few months, but last time I tested it after repacking the exhaust it was 100dB at 4500RPM.

My 182s currently got the standard exhaust on it, but is slowly rusting away. Once it falls off I'm getting a nice stainless one on it - far cheaper than the OEM Renault!

Luckily the exhaust on my Monaro is Bi-modal so I can shut it up if I so wish but it still annoys me. I can't remember the last time I heard a car that I thought 'Ouch, that is far too loud'.

The police can also take action if your vehicle's silencer doesn’t work or if you’re driving in a way that creates too much noise

Bugger.

In all seriousness, this is a real grievance of mine, cars with loud exhausts at low speed and bikes with 'RACE CANZ' doing 60 in a 30, it's just not needed, it's anti social to the core. Seize the vehicle and impound it, revenue generator and a real deterant.

Half the time you hear a big silly exhaust noise and it's some spotty oik in a clapped out Clio or Fiat Punto. Don't understand why they would want to draw attention to themselves as they get *******s most likely.

ill be happy with that really have a huge dislike for 19 year olds with their 1.0l corsa doing 5mph making all the noise of an aircraft taking off.

But what about muscle cars and supercars? They actually make a sound that is pleasing to the ear. Just because you're sick of chavs with 4pot engines and coke can exhausts means Ferraris also get nailed.

i agree with car that as Standard should be an exception, but cars that should just be town run abouts with massive coke cans as you call it should get all thats coming to them. v8 v6s sound sweet on their own :D

If it is standard and how the car left the showroom can you still be fined?

There's Lambo Murcielago local and even at idol that thing is very loud. Would be intrigued to know the db figures for that.

I'd like to think the police would use common sense and use the rule for the special people.

I got pulled a few weeks back the was told to give it some revs to hear how loud my exhaust was. Thankfully it's standard and only sounds like this

Why?

Road vehicles

The noise levels for cars used on a public road is 74 decibel (dB(A)). Most vehicles produce lower levels.

Off-road vehicles and direct injection diesels are allowed to be 1 dB(A) louder. These allowances can be combined, so the limit for an off-road vehicle with a direct injection diesel engine is 76 dB(A).

It’s illegal to modify the exhaust system to make a vehicle noisier after it has been ‘type approved’ (checked it meets environmental and safety standards). The police can also take action if your vehicle's silencer doesn’t work or if you’re driving in a way that creates too much noise.

I think 74db(A) is the drive by noise level, not an exhaust noise level.

You do realise that the noise is only pleasing to the ear of a minority, right? Most people won't get beyond: "wow, that car is annoyingly loud". Most people on this forum seem to forget that an interest in cars to that depth is a minority sport.

Exact wording from the MOT test regarding exhausts.

Reason for rejection
4. A silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition.

I've only twice failed a car for being stupidly loud, and both times they had basically done away will all silencers or had a tiny little one at the back. Both times they were small cars with small engines.
