So it appears the Police are clamping down on noisy exhausts.

The only reason I have ever ran a loud end can is:

1: I was 17 and a rude boy. I grew out of this when it became apparent how stupid I looked.

2: /clarkson voice
More pooooweeeeer

But, to be honest this is always so negligible, you may as well select a quiet end can.

3: Genuine reason. Running a motorcycle in traffic. Loud can has saved my life a few times as people hear and are aware of you more. I'd run one again if I could get away with it, but it is selfish.

I'm not sure having a loud can generally should be banned to be honest. It's more WHEN this noise is made that I have issues with. Late at night I have more of an issue hearing a chav go past with a dustbin exhaust, than I do an N/A supercar car driving past my house at full chat at midday (in terms of noise only I mean).

I propose a better a better law:
Any car with 4cyl or less with a displacement of 1800cc or less is not allowed to have a loud exhaust.
Any car with 8cyl or more with a displacement of 4000cc or more is REQUIRED to have an unbaffled exhaust so that the general public can marvel at the gorgeous sound such engines produce.

What about my 2.8 straight six cars then.... free choice?

Edit: I agree with your idea though, I like it a lot.

I'll take my turbo'ed 1.3 elsewhere then :(

When i used to live on a street on a moderately busy road it wasn't so much the noisy exhausts that were annoying, it was the exhausts coupled with the frankly stupid amount of speed bumps on the road that prolonged what could just be a very short drive by of homes...

So my 1797cc 1.8 Integra is not allowed?!

Time to redefine your pish scale system :D

There should be a rule, good sounding cars can have a decent loud exhaust.

However little Kevin from the estate with his fart canon on the back of a 1 litre corsa, magnetised and driven through a branch of halfords, the police should crush their cars with the chav inside. Then sterilise the mother.

I better get out there with a hacksaw and a welder then, three cars to remove the exhaust from.

I wonder how they're going to enforce an OEM exhaust law on cars with non-OEM engines...

They should start clamping down on the over excessive noise of some exhausts on some cars as it nothing really short of male attention whoring/peacocking.

I have to say this is pretty much self policed anyway. You soon get tired of having to listen to the constant booming whilst driving. Ive sold a few cars because I have grown sick of the noise they make.

Surely that is most supercars, muscle cars and bikes now illegal right?

No - it means they'll clamp down on any car that is substantially louder than stock.

I.e. my Westfield was SVA'd at 96db - the limit was 99db - I'll be fine.

However that little 1.25 Fiesta with the cherry bomb straight through ;)

I live about 3/4 of a mile from a train track which in turn is next to an A road. When inside I can not hear the train go past, but I can hear chavs in their scoobys and corsas go down the road.

Sure I have had loud exhausts in the past, but I grew out of it. I don't mind good sounding exhausts, just not loud ones for the sake of it.

If only the police would do this here.

The amount of knuckle draggers in their Imprezas that make the ground shake, and coffee can Corsas that cane it off the traffic lights outside my flat is enough to make it a really bad idea to open the window here.

Worse still, I live beside a petrol station (my choice of course) so if one of these unmuffled morons is idling in the petrol station I get to enjoy it over whatever TV/film/music I'm trying to enjoy.

Between that and the 100db motorbikes, despite liking most things automotive I wish the vehicles would be confiscated and the owners crushed into cubes.

Thank god, fed up of stupid scooters which make all the racket of a veyron and all the power of a lawn mower...

+1...one of the kids in my neighbourhood drove on of those...and guess what he replaced it now with a "sporty" Citroen Saxo and a ridiculously sized after market exhaust. I don't think this it's the police's job to clamp down on this but should be done as part of the annual MOT testing...too noisy, no MOT...
