So lets say I don't want to overclock.....

good man, you'll be amazed how easy it is to overclock. I've had my 5850 overclocked to the hilt for over a year with no issues, so just a little push like you're planning should be fine. Also, the 2500k is pretty much guaranteed 50% overclock with a 30 quid cooler. Well worth the extra performance.

This, install card, driver, open up CCC, push the gpu core sliders to the right, apply, sit back and enjoy with the 7850.

2500K, MSI do some motherboards(I have the Z68A-GD55) with the 'OC Genie button', push the button, voilà:4.2GHz stable(it can go further if you do it yourself manually), all with pushing the big blue button!

It will achieve 4.2GHz with the stock Intel cooler but at the expense of noise and higher temps.

Dude when people on this forum say "overclocking" they mean downloading a program and moving two sliders up until your graphics card drivers crash then moving the slider down until they don't. Go with the 7850 and overclock it way better performance than any of the others.

Except the 7850 when OC'd is faster than a 480, has more vram, runs cooler, and uses far less power :p

And of course the 480 doesn't overclock
Also what's this running cooler? I'm sorry, do you notice that something inside your case is 7c or 8c hotter? Does it exhaust it into your face causing discomfort? No? So why does it matter? Also you mention less power? I'm sorry, does 10p a month extra on your electric bill make a difference to you? If so maybe you should consider buying a DS or a PSP because if that 10p per month makes a difference then you can't afford to run a PC.

Hi Andy,

Likely, but once again seriously consider o/c the Sapphire 7850 or MSI 7850.

I, like yourself felt completely out of my territory when it comes to overclocking.
I've never overclocked a darn computer component in my life, except 2 days ago with the Sapphire 7850 OC.
I didn't even know where to start and felt terrified of the idea (exaggerating but for effect).

Asus GPU Tweak
GPU-Z
Heaven 3.0 Basic benchmarking tool

That's it, that's all I used. And time of course. I needed the better part of 1 day to be satisfied with the clocks rates/voltage and kept my eye on that growing thread on how to o/c your 7850.

Yet, that 7870 sure is going to be a great card and yes better (than 'stock' 7850), since you can overclock it someday if you get the urge. I appreciate your hesitation on o/c though; it was a brand new thing for me.
In terms of CPU overclocking, I haven't a clue where to start yet am not concerned because many games these days are not CPU dependent at all.

Hi guys,

so I got paid a little more than I was expecting. So now looking at better graphics cards (maybe).

Do you think it's worth skipping all the ones discussed so far and going for

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-296-SP

No. 7870's are overpriced. Either get a 7850 for £185 and OC it (HIS version), or go the whole hog and get a 7950 (£299).

7870's are priced in no-mans-land atm, they aren't £95 better than a 7850, and for £25 more you can have a 7950.

That's what I like to hear.

As I say, got a bit more money than I expected so think I'm going to go for that card + an OCZ agility 120gb SSD that I wasn't getting before!
