So lets say I don't want to overclock.....

I'd go with the 580 because I prefer Nvidia drivers.
If you prefer AMD drivers then the 7950 would be a good choice.

Performance is so similar that you should chose the one you like based on what else you find beneficial.

After doing a little more research on the 7950 3gb vs GTX 580 it seems that one is better for one game and then the other will be better for another.

The main pros that people come out with for the 7950 is reduced heat and power. If that's the case and you aren't bothered by a little extra power and temps, is the GTX 580 the more powerful card?

Also the one thing that stands out about AMD is drivers. What issues exactly were people having with drivers compared with Nvidia?

Get the HIS 7850, oc the balls out of it, it will then be faster than the £127 more expensive 580!

When the 7850 is oc'd, even if you oc a 580 and it was to get you ever so slightly higher performance, there is no chance the performance difference equates to +£127!

Seriously it's a no brainer, your simply throwing good cash away at last years tech!

Nvidia diehards have even been taken aback by the performance of the 7850 oc'd it's that good, check the 7850 oc'ing thread and see for yourself, the performance numbers are there and they can outperform 580's.

As you find yourself with a bit of extra cash, get the Samsung 120Hz 3D monitor on offer, claim the vat back and your looking at something like ~£377(monitor and 7850) for mind blowing, eye popping visuals, you will come back and thank me, 3D gaming needs to be seen to be believed!

The driver issues, both of them can have issues, don't believe for a minute/fooled that it's a one team problem.

Take yourself over to Nvidia's/Evga's forums, you'll see plenty driver problems lurking about in there.

But wouldn't a 7950 be even better than the 7850?

Still tempted to wait for the 670Ti although it seems the specs are going to be there to rival the 7950 so the thought going through my head is I might as well get the 7950 now so I can get playing rather than wait for a card that will perform the same

But wouldn't a 7950 be even better than the 7850?

Of course it will be better, it's a faster card, but the performance gains after the 7850 are literally tiny in games considering the much higher outlay you have to spend!

That's the way high end gpu's work, it will always be the same, a 10% faster card may sound like a big performance advantage but it can equate to ~4fps difference!

Last time out was the 580 worth the extra over a 570?

Was the 6970 worth the extra over the 6950?

No chance imho!

Ok, well given that I'm sending this to Ireland it would work out around an extra €150 to get the monitor + 7850.

Thinking maybe it's worth getting the better graphics card now and upgrading my monitor later on.

It wasn't mentioned but if you think I should overclock one thing surely I should do the processor too? :)

Overclocking a CPU (even sandybridge k) is more complicated than overclocking the GPU. But I'd get the K anyway, because even if you don't plan on overclocking, you have the option to at least try it later for a tiny extra cost.

When I used to work in sales and people used to say to me "yeah but x product is coming out soon" I used to always say, but if you wait for that you'll always be waiting for something. No really to get the sale but just because it's true.

NOW I'M DOING THE EXACT SAME THING

So was almost set on a 7950. Now I'm thinking GTX 670Ti might be cheaper. Then I thought, lets just go and get a GTX 680 and be done with it. But people are talking about OC models and newer models of it being out soon.

Does it ever end? :)

Does make me wonder why they have 10+ in stock of these but not other brands. Are they not as good?

They are Galaxy cards branded as KFA2 for the euro market as Galaxy don't sell in Europe.

Reference cards are all the same, made to the same spec, handed out to various aib's who then slap warranty, bits and bobs in the box(or not) stickers and bios onto them.

And is this motherboard ok for the above graphics card, i5 2500k and 8GB ram

?

Unless you specifically want a Micro ATX motherboard (They tend to be more for HTPC's or very small cases) this is pretty much exactly the same but full size ATX (The standard) so a few extra PCI-E ports, audio ports etc as it is bigger, well recommended here (Mine was delivered thursday due to the recommendations on the forum), has great UK based support should the need arise AND is on This Week Only deal at a great price (so great is infuriating as despite ordering mine wednesday morning it wasn't on This Week Only first thing! So I paid £84):

Absolutely gutted. The company I ordered the Asus reference GTX 680 from apparently shipped my product a few hours ago so I couldn't cancel it so I've had to cancel the windforce Gigabyte GTX 680.

Am I likely to see much difference between the two?
