So my boss aint talking to me

I would normally get on really well with him. See him as a mate and even said I would feed his cat when he goes away. I'm not like that and life is to short to be petty about things and thats whats getting to me I think.

If it's anything like references in big companies the only thing it will say is person X worked from Y to Z dates because they are afraid of saying anything else. I'd just continue working same as normal, at the end of the day it's just business.

I thought that companies are not allowed to send your current employer reference requests until you have atleast given in your notice?

Id say carry on doing your job, if he continues to be an idiot about it, go to someone higher in the company and raise this concern, we all have the right to change jobs if we wish.

Act like normal, it will wind him up more.

It's his problem at the end of the day.

This basically. He's unhappy you're leaving, but that's his problem. You're moving on, he has to deal with it.

Hopefully, he'll give a decent reference and you'll get the job and move on. He isn't allowed to produce a false reference, but he could refuse I guess...

Ok been to speak to HR. They are doing the reference so might be all good on that front and I have to go see the new job tomorrow with ID etc so will see how it goes then. I might just explain to them whats going on to.

I agree. I had an agency do this to me once, very frustrating and short sighted of them.

I had the same thing happen to me, request for reference was sent before I had even agreed to take the job. Not sure if the company was 100% sure I was going to take the job but I wasnt and in the end, ended up staying with the company I was with after a counter offer.

It wasnt nice to have my manager ask me what was going on before I even had a chance to have a chat. I was lucky I had a manager who was really understanding.

Erm no, don't mention anything to them... there's no need and it will just make them think you are potentially causing hassle, no matter how minor. Use your knouse and keep schtum!

My old boss did similarly. I applied for a job elsewhere and on the application form ensured that didn't tick the box allowing them to contact your references without your permission. Went for the interview and lo and behold a couple of days later I get hauled into the Financial Controller's office for a impromptu meeting with her and my boss (twas only a small, 4-person company) and immediately interrogated with the question "So you're leaving then???"

This was the same guy who - when I made it known that I was less than happy with my pay and conditions at that time - barked out the retort that "IT Engineers are ten a penny". Oh how I chuckled to myself when they badly struggled to find a replacement anywhere near qualified or competent during my 6 Week notice period. I reminded my boss of his earlier remark on several occasions :D

In short, be professional and don't sink to his level. He sounds like he's being petty and childish; just don't rise to it!

Be the bigger man and continue doing your job.
Then when you leave, give him a letter saying how it was great working with him and it's a pity to be leaving. Etc. Etc.

If you're that fussed, I'm not bothered with work relationships myself, a bit of a friendly greeting but thats it, I'm here to work at the end of the day, I don't like small talk or superficial niceties I think they're a waste of time.

Had a similar thing happen to me recently. Fortunately, my boss knew I was probably leaving (and was the nicest guy ever...) so it didn't bother him that I didn't even get chance to chat to him before he got the phone call. I was pretty annoyed with the HR company though. Then there was a problem with the new job offer which meant I almost couldn't take it. Got it resolved in the end, but it was scary to think that I could have been in the position of upsetting my boss and then not being able to take the other job
