So my boss aint talking to me

The whole reference thing is always a issue when changing jobs.
I want to have a firm offer before letting an existing employer know, but sometimes they want to take up references first.

Thankfully, my last few jobs have been happy to make the offer first, let me resign, and then take up references.

I suppose it's a bit of a risk, but hasn't been a problem for me.
 
It's really not a clever idea to apply for other jobs without telling your current boss, no matter how bad your relationship. It's very silly if you do actually get along. As others have said, if you have an HR department/person, they will supply the basic start-date-finish-date reference, but no more. Most new companies will want a more personal appraisal of your work and only your line manager can give that. However you tell them about job hunting, they aren't going to be happy (unless they want you to go), but a request out of the blue for a reference will **** them off a lot more than one they were at least expecting. If your boss kicks up when you discuss it, you can explain this at interview (although a good rule is NEVER diss your current/last company in interview).

The other company were well out of line for 2 reasons. 1 - asking for the reference at an inappropriate time. Bad play on their part, they should have waited. 2 - They asked his manager for a reference rather than the HR department.

I've applied for lots of positions before, the reference never gets done until a confirmed written offer is in my hand and I have accepted.
 
I have never told an employer I am looking for a new position, on the whole they wouldn't find out until you handed notice in and asked for references.

Sometimes you do get muppet companies like the one the OP dealt with who do just go ahead with references upfront even after being told not to, but it's by no means the norm.
