well, ive read bits and pieces about these hipers expiring on their owners, but mine (blue 580w modular) has been running fine since april 05! but i woke up this morning, bit of a bad smell. tried the power button and it wouldnt turn on!

the psu smells really bad, so i went down the high street and picked up a ... jeantech 400w to tidfe me over. its now working an it seems that nowt else fried!

so now i need a new 500w+ psu for about £60 and i need to return the hiper to OCUK!

any siuggestions on a new psu?

yup another vote for the cosair.

Mine is fantastic, and the voltage rails are SPOT ON even when loaded. It's freakin' awesome !

yea just read a review sounds good tbh. seasonic oem stuff basically.

hmmm just been on the phone with CS, and it seems that they will not honour the sales of goods act...hmmmmmm

all i have to say is what do you expect if you buy a hiper and have already read of multiple instances where they have cease to work?

I'd have to add myself to that list - mine bit the dust after 11 and a half months. It did so quietly, though, no damage to any components. Currently running its replacement in my main system and no problems to note (voltages all in spec) - though I wouldn't buy Hiper again for anything more than a budget system.

I second (or third / fourth!) the recommendation for the Corsair.

My PSU is smelling badly, and it about to go out I think...

I am trying to RMA it with OC, I was wondering of doing what you did and get a cheap PSU (about £10 500W my 430w Anec is about to go) to tide me over for the holidays ( a week or so) so i can get some work done. is it worth taking the risk do you think?

My hardware is below, sorry to sort of hijack your thread, good luck with getting a new one and future PSU's :D.

AMD 64 3500, ASUS A8N-SLI mobo, 2 gig 3200 RAM, ASUS 7900GT, 180gig SATA2 HDD

that makes no sense when you consider the date of my purchase, back in 05. that was when they were new to the market, and at that point there was no issue. its only after us and probably a few batches beforew started to die (after 12 months, and now 18 months for mine) that people have started to notice them having relatively poor reliability.

i got a jeantech 400w psu from a place and ill takeit back when i get my stuff sorted.

unfortunately ocuk refusing to comply with sales of goods act ATM so will have to involve trading standards etc.

corsair!

i used to have the hiper too mine is about 13months old its still fine though just resting as i got the corsair now.

Well when I built my system last year I got a Hiper but replaced it same week as it was noisy and made a very annoying whine. I replaced it with a Seasonic and have never looked back.

I'm not making excuses for owning one (honest)....but as 'Nickg' has said, 2 years ago they were pretty new. Not only that, but it was around the time that ATX2 was starting to become common with the new sockets and PCI-E. Pretty much any unit that bothered to comply with those specs back then was an 'enthusiast' unit and quality could usually be inferred from that.

I wouldn't buy another, but I'm trusting it to power my system, so it had better not take anything out! :D
