So my new macbook comes in a week or so...what do i need to install?

Thanks, ill be sure to download some of them when it comes (couple of days according to their tracking. Coming all the way from china :( )

If i want to run xp + os x (using bootcamp?), is it best to do that first? I assume ill need to format and partition the disk?

LOL, you're using OS X not Windows. ;)

Boot Camp will partition and resize your disk for you on the fly through Mac OS X.

I know. Thats why i am asking if its best to sort out xp before i actually start installing/using os x.

ok so i don't actually have to format everything and partition it, like i would if i were installing xp + *nix on a non mac pc?

So i got it (13 inch MBA) the other day, haven't stopped using it. Even for a bit of gaming it seems quite fast, so quite pleased with it :). Plus the screen looks a lot more sharp than I'm used to (guessing because each pixel is so small/closer to other pixels) - apart from one font used on sites (not sure what one) its a lot easier to read i think.

Is there any way to show all open windows in the dock though? a bit like in windows xp?

I often have lots of windows open (in xp i have the start menu task bar thing at two rows high because i have so many open normally) - in os x its impossible to keep track of where each one is. The nearest i've worked out is by minimising, it moves it to the dock. But once restored its not in the dock any more, so i quickly lose place of where it is.

Right clicking on the icon in the dock (eg the firefox icon to show a few FF windows i have open) isn't any where as easy as just finding it in xp would be.

Also, under settings - security, i encryped my home folder with the filevault thing. Does this encrypt everything? Like all my firefox data (i.e. passwords) - is that now encrypted?

oh and lastly, apart from steam, where can i get digital downloads for mac games? ive been trying to find some rts or sim games for download, but can't find any.

Enable Expose in the System Preferences. Then you can press F9 to see all windows, F10 all windows for the current app or F11 for the desktop.

Also you can hold left-click on the app's icon in the dock and it will show you all windows for that app (equivalent to F10).

I have been using that (although I didn't realise there was a diff between f9 + f10 ;)). Its still a bit of a pain to quickly switch though (its like 1 click in windows, in os x its 2 buttons + click).

Oh i just remembered another q i have - i've set up multiple spaces - how do i move a window from one space to another?

A quick trigger for expose is to use a four fingered swipe on your trackpad towards you as it shows all open windows. It's even better if you use cmd-m to minimise stuff into the dock as it will also show all those applications as well.

You want to enable hot corners in expose settings. I have top right show spaces, top left all app windows , bottom left all windows, and bottom right is show desktop. You also want to install better touch tool and enable some of the options in that, particularly windows snapping .

Cmd + ~ flips through all windows of your current app, cmd + tab flips through all open apps. If you cmd q when in cmd tabl it will quit apps etc there a bunch of other similar moves like that. Also, when in expose hit space to enable 100% hover mode, and to get a windows style properties box use cmd shift I ( or maybe cmd opt I)

If you use safari, install glims, it adds iseful features.

Little snitch is essential firewall app

Hold ctrl + two finger swipe to zoom in.
Flux is a nice program for late night mac use. Cmd + 1,2,3,4 on a finder windows changes view mode, and two finger pinch zoom changes zoom level in finder and safari.

Cmd , shows preferences of current app. And the ultimate app launcher is cmd + space type first few letters and hit return.
