--Nazi graffiti daubed on memorial--

Vandals have daubed Nazi swastikas on a war memorial in West Sussex.
Police officers also found anti-Semitic graffiti painted on one home and a shop close to the memorial in Chapel Road, Worthing, on Saturday morning.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "This is offensive and racist graffiti. It's fairly large-scale."

The Royal British Legion said it was "dismayed and upset" by the graffiti, which was removed prior to the main service at 1100 GMT.

A spokeswoman for The Royal British Legion said: ""We are very grateful to the council for their prompt reaction to this, allowing people to carry on and hold their service.

"We are glad that the vandal that was trying to disrupt such an important occasion didn't succeed."

'Beyond comprehension'

John Livermore, West Sussex County Councillor for Worthing West, said he was "utterly appalled" that anybody could behave in such a manner.

"The person or persons that did it are just the scum of the earth. It's beyond comprehension - least of all this time of year when we have got our boys out in Afghanistan and Iraq serving Queen and country - that somebody can behave in this despicable fashion.

"They should be drummed out of Worthing, drummed out of the country."

The 14ft stone cross, which is opposite the town hall, bears the names of local men killed in the two world wars.

Anyone with information should contact Sussex Police.

This makes me so sad to see. What motivates people to do things like this?

Um.. I think this is a repost from you too ;)

Reading several repost comments on a topic is actually far more annoying than reading something twice.

If it requires merging or deleting I'm sure the appropriate person will do it.

Well either way, someone left their child out way past their normal bedtime and this is what happens. It's a crappy inane rubbish attempt by the unworthy low life that had a can of paint and no imagination.

Which is why a rule was put in place forbidding the posting of such comments. Unfortunately the rule is never enforced unless a four letter acronym beginning with 'W' is in the offending post, so he's all right.

Doesnt surprise me. Worthing and Lancing have turned into a complete hole over the last 10 years

you know what aswell....probably done by ENGLISH yobs who might not be here if it wasnt for the names they spray painted over....there is a word to describe them, but i might get banned

What a dumb thing to say. It seems completely irrelevant. Can the actions of Britain in Afghanistan and Iraq REALLY be compared to the actions of Britain during WW2?

Correct - but only up to a point ...

Granted there is a massive difference between WW2 - which in a nutshell was about the survival of Europe and the UK against the Nazis - and Iraq/Afghanistan, which is all about oil and American foreign policy.

However, that is no reason to 'diss' the British soldiers that are risking life and limb out there in hellish conditions and, if reports are to be believed, with dodgy or insufficient kit. Any contempt should be directed towards the politicians that put them in that position, not the soldiers themselves.

Indeed. I have always been an opponent to the current wars in the middle east- right up until they went in. The troops should have our total backing, and we should direct our anger at those that sent them there. Can't stand those that see a tank get blown to pieces and say "serves them right for being there".

I have always seen that the memorials around here seem to be treated with the greatest respect, and to hear this news is really shocking. If there is a neo-Nazi underground in West Sussex then 'fair enough' (in as much as I can see why they did it) but no doubt this was kids who cannot comprehend what they have done. The memorials are a symbol not only of the two great wars, but of all those across the globe who have given their lives to protect us.

Disgusting little ****s

If they get caught they should be sent out the country to a place where they will have no freedom at all

We should convert some out of the way place into a national socialist paradise, and give them all one way tickets there.

Most likely. A neighbour of mine adopted or fostered two problem children. The children daubed "KKK" and swastikas over grave stones in the graveyard of a nearby church. There was no political or racial motivation behind it other than they got a few cans of spraypaint and decided to make a nuisance of themselves.
