So what's the cheapest used car to buy/run that isn't a complete POS to drive?

Of course you wouldn't take the car to a stealers but you would go to them for a rubber diapohram (sp?) they are around 40 quid for a piece of rubber you can't get 2nd hand.

How do you define a POS? My Mrs has a 2007 1.5l (petrol) Yaris which is very economical and cost $10k CAD. Yes it wouldn't be great for motorway driving but it is a very cheap, reliable run around.

Xsara 1.9TD

I got a 90k mile one with full leather supportive seats, electric drivers seat, aircon, auto wipers, steering wheel controls, full stainless exhaust (looked standard), 4 brand new tyres, all new aircon pump and pipes, serviced every 6k from new, cambelt and tensioners just done, new brakes etc really immaculate inside and out and stupidly ott maintained.

A grand, I did 20k in it, put new front tyres on it once (£35 each), changed oil and filter every 6k and sold it for the same price. All while keeping up 40mpg.

Don't think motoring gets much cheaper than that, and it wasn't bad to drive either. All the benefits of a 306 TD but the Xsara's are usually owned by older gentlemen and thus looked after!

Id go for a Peugeot 106/306

From my personal experience, both are an absolute riot to drive, especially as a country road basher. You'll feel a little safer in the 306, but they both drive like smaller/larger versions of themselves. Wouldn't really go for the 1.9 diesel version, as its as fast as the 1.4 petrol.

Can't go wrong with a Pug 106 imo, or a 306 if you need to transport more than yourself. I've had a Pug 106 banger that i expected to keep for a few months, and it's been going now for 3 years. Its cost peanuts to keep on the road.

The 1.9TD isn't very fast at all, so whatever this "screw mod" must do to it, it must be giving it at least 100bhp! My 1.4 petrol 8v kept up with a 1.9TD, they were equal in performance.

Peugeots also have split rear seats, the 106 and 306 both, very useful. The 106 SXI/GTI is pretty quick however. If your going for a 106, you might aswell include a citroen Saxo too, as they're basically the same car.

Some people have had bad luck with the electrics though. You get good ones and you get bad ones in my experience. Me and Bro's 306's were fine, my brothers 106 sxi is perfect, my mates Rallye is a joke; poor windows, unreliable central locking, dodgy lights and earths all around. The 95-97 cars both have a keycode immobiliser that can go catastrophically wrong in some cases, but it can be disabled.

Afaik, the "screw mod" is simply adding in a bleed valve or MBC to increase boost and winding a screw on the fuel pump to increase fuel pressure.

The old Isuzu engined Vauxhalls were often 'tuned' in a very similar fashion.

Derv 106 doesn't have electrics :D Nothing to go wrong. ;)
Windey windows and you put the key in the door to lock it.... if you can be bothered.
Immobiliser, yea had that one my various rallye's but not on this poverty model thing.

My pov spec 106 has the keypad....but other than that has no electrics to go wrong.

Don't bother locking it...never have. Its the ultimate in worry free motoring, parked it in all sorts of places.
