So what's the cheapest used car to buy/run that isn't a complete POS to drive?

Something like a Citroen Xantia with aircon & heated seats ? Very cheap and very relaxing to drive. Of course you mustn't be an interior snob and get turned on by soft touch german plastics.
EDIT: nvm, didn't see the cheap to run requirement, although a diesel wouldn't be too expensive to run but still, most cheap to run cars are an absolute POS to drive imho.

Which isnt really the thread title. MX5s dont really get great MPG.

the thread title was the cheapest used car to buy / run

there was no MPG requirements specified.

At the end of the day its a N/A 1.8 or 1.6 in a lightweight car with a book combined mpg figure in the 30s.

Parts are Hugely cheap for these things and the initial purchase cost for a MK1 can get you a good one for < 1k.

Can't think what else is as fun to drive for such a little Total Cost of Ownership.

~30mpg is still almost half what you can get with some cars tho. Might almost be worth it with quality of the driving experience but your pushing up fuel and insurance costs by 30-40%.

How many petrols are going to average distinctly more than a MK1 MX5 that will do mid 30s mpg ?

You could get a diesel that will do 50 mpg + but for that you're going to need to do the miles to make diesel worth it.

Seriously dude.

What?! The annual fuel bill will be more than the cars value so when you're looking at cheapest car to run and buy MPG should feature as that will be the prime cost. Fun is not an attribute inline with the thread title and on a similar logic the Tesla Roadster falls over at the buying part.

Isnt 2011 not a fresh chance to clear your name of 'WTf' threads? This isnt pistonheads so not sure if bashing mk1 Mx5 as a suggestion into every thread is a running joke or not?

sorry what exactly is this about ?

Is this about buying the very cheapest possible car or about buying a reasonably priced car thats fun to drive ? as i've wandered into the thread thinking the OP is after the latter rather than the former.

I probably wouldn't spend less than a grand on something half decent like a small engined Mk.I Focus.

I've no doubt that you could get some good cars for less than that but I don't have a clue what to look out for, so i'd have to go to four figures to be sure I wasn't getting an absolute lemon.

20k miles, £1k to buy, 40mpg, zero depreciation, £70 on 2 tyres and £45 on oil changes.

Don't think motoring gets much cheaper and hardly a french grot box.

Mk1 mx5 is a good choice! It's not quite in the same fold as the rest of the cars an wouldn't be the cheapest to run or buy in comparison to the French things in here.

For me the xsara is winning the thread, and I would probably like to do the most miles in that. I'm staring the possibility of a 25000 mile year in the face next year if I get relocated unfavourably in my job and would definitely be looking for a cheapo mile munched for the commute. Much as I love my current car, being british it would not take kindly to that sort of driving.

Very interesting and timely thread!
