Just a weird thought passing my few cells, just what is the true point of a forum?

Ok, we all discuss issues etc but, for what?

I'm not talking of the OC/UK forums, more forums / message boards in general.

Who are we actually talking to? Do forums ever generate something of a reaction outside the circle of forum members?

I suppose I'm asking, why do we post then? My girlfriend asked me this the other day, and its had me thinking ever since.

Surely, I could be doing something else? :o :p

Thoughts appreciated. :)

You meet interesting people with an interest in the same things and issues as you.

What I use it for, and its a way for me to help people out while sitting on my bum, so all is good! :)

"What is the meaning of life?"

Its to bring together like-minded individuals to share information, opinions and general chat on whatever the topic of the forum is. Thats what I reckon anyway.

Undoubtedly the best feature is the collective knowledge of all the users. Ask a question and there is a strong chance that someone else knows the answer.

Opinions are a bit more risky, but you can learn to respect the opinion of people who are consistantly well informed on certain subjects.

Explaining the community side of it is a bit beyond my abilities though. People can form deep ties with an online community, even if they have never met any of the people who share it.

What I cant understand is why I sometimes spend 10 minutes writing epic responses to threads and then realise the original question was something like "Whats better: horse or cheese". Why would I possibly waste so much time and effort doing something so futile.

DAMMIT I'VE DONE IT AGAIN!

Adding to this, sometimes it is easier to talk to people about a problem who are completely removed from the situation.
