So who has been buying success in the Premier League?

I think that Man City have bought the league.

I don't think that fans of any club in the top 6 or 7 though can claim any moral high ground. Man Utd BOUGHT second place after all!

I would actually prefer to go back to the days of the old football league. Can you remember the likes of Aston Villa and Watford gaining promotion and challenging for the league title in their first seasons?

We didnt fail dismally. We failed dismally if your comparing us to when we were winning everything with ease. In fact we improved on last season, thats not a failure.

Also, its a gradual progression and decline as I said in my first post. Citys isnt, its a massive leap.

Spending £100m+ in 18 months and ending up ....9th? in the league - sorry that IS dismal failure by anyone 's book (without even mentioning the team on the other side of Stanley Park who scraped by spending relatively virtually nothing and still ended up higher in the league)

No Im not comparing you to the 70/s /80's teams at all, even comparing you to the team of 2005 its pretty awful (after the above investment)

Im just using Liverpool as a perfect example of why money on its own doesnt always mean instant success, or even prolonged success (as in Chelsea).

Yes City have spent a whole lot more than Fenway (and the owners before them) but it could still be argued that their minimun expectation after that investment was getting through the CL group stages

Just to be clear Im not knocking Liverpool per se - Im pretty sure Fenway expected a lot more than the CC success for that kind of investment

You are of course correct, a lot of players will probably stay so they still have worth , whether in sell-on value, or team strength - but BR surely has money to spend before the end of the summer (it would be very interesting to see what happens if he doesnt get any / doesnt spend anything significant and see any difference in results at the end of next season)

Yes, Newcastle have done well and they are the gradual decline and success im talking about. They will never win the league though and no team will without cash. Its simple as.

They wont instantly no - but then the level of investment (in one year) allows for that not to be an expectation on the manager / team

IF (and yes , ok currently its a big IF) they can stay in contention for CL places in March / April over the next few years, and therefore get Europa experience at the same time, there is no reason why they cant 1st aim to beat those around them at the end of next season and so on.

If City /Utd suddenly have another 2 or three home and away games per season where the team is well set up etc etc, anything can happen (and as the old addage goes - usually does).

As Ireland proved last night - sitting back and defending isnt how to beat a "superior" force - and hoofing it to the 1/2 way line when in possession. More teams (like Swansea etc etc) need to really aim to play their own game against the bigger teams and that in itself will make the top four closer to the rest of the top 10

Just say "we need regulations"... without any explanation... is completely meaningless. So what I said wasn't already echoed above.

Stop being silly. You know what the words means, and what context it is used. Im not going to say I want this and that, just regulations.

We'll agree to disagree on the dismal. Yes we failed to meet expectations though.

Comolli's gone now, lets hope we can improve on that expensive ordeal.

I agree, it doesnt always mean instant success. But if you want to win the league in 1 season then it needs cash and thats all im saying and its plain for all to see.

I think there should be a regulation that for every million spent over and beyond their means a club has to post a video on YT of one of the board members covering a Britney Spears song.

Of course that will never happen as that implies that a club goes from Championship promotion to EPL Champions in the same season

Exactly what I was thinking, Moses, heres your answer.

It could happen, and what you infer is not exactly what im implying.

Dont forget united got ridiculous amounts of money back for Ronaldo and Tevez.
I'm a Chelsea fan and while i do admite we've bought allot of players if you want to compete In the top competitions clubs which dont have the title winning history like Chelsea and City have to spend money.

All the youngsters wanted to go to the teams with history i.e Madrid, Munich, Barcelona and Man U, However if chelsea and city continue to win trophies then they will get to a point where they can attract the best youngsters and develop talent and still compete at the same time and its only then will the net spend fall.

They paid his owners, not MU :)

Don't forget MU never owned him, they had him on loan for a couple of years from some sports investment group run by Kia j00000000000000bichiran or whatever his name was.

He wasn't Utd's player, he was only on loan, IIRC they paid 8mil or so to loan him and had to stump up another 25-30mil to buy him.

I'm still unclear how much City paid for him I'm sure at the time he was supposed to have cost £20-25mil and everyone wondered why on earth Utd didn't pay for him especially after he seemed to find his top scoring form again. I'm sure it was 6 months, or a year later there was some story he really cost £45mil or so, I really don't know what the true figure was.

Anyway, it went to Kia whatever the hell his devilness's name is.

i would agree with u that it's not really an english league now, almost any transfer now is for a foreign player the only club who seem to have good young english players is arsenal with chamberlain and wilshere that will be really good players when they are older and in the top 4 not 1 manager is english now, i think england should start helping the english players and managers now.

Man Utd earnt their money. They invested in a large stadium and managed their commercial interests well.

Even then their net spend is reasonable.
