So who here owes HMRC

Worked 3 months start of this tax year then left paid tax those 3 months so hopefully i will be getting one of these letters.

Start of this tax year? You won't get anything till the end of the tax year, how do they know that you will not get a job before the end of the tax year?

This is why I stated that to get my tax back I either need to claim it all back, or, as is more sensible (but harder), get another job and pay correct tax, either receiving a refund in tax in my pay or applying for one at the end of the tax year.

I've been temping for the past few years, chopping and changing between agencies & employers as contracts end and others open up. Quite often they weren't prepared to wait for me to get a P45 from my previous employer and insisted on a P46 being filled in. In short I'm probably screwed, but come next April I won't be earning enough to pay income tax. (I'll be at South Tyneside College on a £170 a week Merchant Navy Officer Cadetship all being well by then)

gpt home, no letter :(

my gf got £1200 back, that wasnt PAYE related though so just an odd coincidence, I want to help her spend it down the pub, she is dragging her feet, where is my club!

I hear right that they are going to recoup it in 1 tax year. At £1500 average that's over £100 a month extra, that will push many into debt

It does sound harsh especially when it is their fault in the first place. For especially low earners however, I expect HMRC will have more lenient payment plans. Pushing people into debt won't help us either.

I was reading the Guardian today, and they say there is a clause buried in the legislation regarding tax that errors that have occurred over a year ago can be written off, and that it can also be argued that because it was the fault of HMRC, the victims shouldn't have to pay a penny.

Only if you or your employer provided the correct information.

I'm owed some back apparently but i've known that for ages, they won't tell me how much though as the job centre won't pull their finger out of their arse and send the relevant info to HMRC about the tax I paid on JSA for a few weeks.

same job for 3 years so I am doubtful if entitled to anything... just my luck as would have been nice for chrimbo :)

(still crossing fingers, toes etc etc)

Which, HMRC or Tesco?

Either way I see it being quite fruitless, Tesco don't want anything to do with me now that I'm not employed by them basically. HMRC will likely inform me to pursue a refund or tell me to wait till I have a new job and fill out a P46...which is the option I'm going for anyway as I need a job.

The point was more that I spent 3 weeks of phone calls (0845 number from mobile) and countless visits to the store on my days off to just be told 'nobody is in' despite also being told someone would be in at certain times.

It's 'only' £350 (total tax paid), but it's more principle than anything, especially as my last pay cheque was a lot smaller after deductions than my first one despite being owed for a lot more. Unfortunately I still don't have my payslip though. I went in store and was informed it'd be in the post with my P45...that arrived on Sat and I've not seen a single piece of post since.

As said previous, write to HMRC. Send them a letter explaining, copy of your P45, and they can issue a P6(T) to your new employer when you find a job which adjusts your tax paid. You'd then get your refund in the first paycheck in your new job.

If I read it correctly, you do have a P45, which is all you need.

changed jobs around 8 weeks ago from a self employed low income delivery job to a full time more generous paid one, 2 weeks in i got a wage paying around the correct income tax of about £400, i then 4 weeks later received another pay check with a tax sum of a princely £30, my income form April on the low pay delivery job was minuscule so im wondering how that would effect the sums due but i have a feeling i shal be getting a letter, thank god it was only one pay check!
