So who here owes HMRC

As said previous, write to HMRC. Send them a letter explaining, copy of your P45, and they can issue a P6(T) to your new employer when you find a job which adjusts your tax paid. You'd then get your refund in the first paycheck in your new job.

If I read it correctly, you do have a P45, which is all you need.

Well I don't need to write a letter, just speak to a new employer, explain the situation and ask to fill out a P46 or whatever, which does equate to the same thing happening as writing them a letter...and puts the onus on the employer to get it right not me. :p

Unfortunately knowing what the job market is like I suspect it'll be a while before I can get one. I'm quite limited in what I can do as I'm repeating my final year of uni so it has to be part time and evenings/weekends, most part time jobs available are mornings or afternoons, as I'll have lectures/seminars I can't really do them. :(

I'm guessing this will affect me somehow, changed jobs during the 2008/09 tax year, had a pay rise since then and also get various company benefits that affect my tax limits.

Just hope it's good news rather than a money request...

i'm suspecting I might get a letter, as i changed in May 2008 from a job with a company car to a job with no company car, and I've always seemed to pay a lot in tax for the last two years. Hopefully it will be saying I am owed tax, not that I owe them.

Think I may be owed as i've been on BR for my part time job but i've been doing more hours over the summer.
[edit] called HMRC (wasn't on hold for that long), looking at £700 back on my next pay!

My sister just got a cheque for £1200 and is expecting 2 more payments as she has been on basic rate since 2008. So to say she is happy is an understatement.

If I get a letter it'll be because I owe them money no doubt :( although we have a very good team of accountants at work so chances are low that I'll get a letter.

You could write to them.

LOL. You'll be waiting a good 8 or 9 weeks before they process your letter. Trust me, we have clients who have debt collectors on the door because HMRC still hasn't processed their applications.

I never understand why people don't work out how much tax they should be paying and investigate why it's a lot higher or lower than it's meant to be...

Slightly different, but i started a new job about 8 weeks ago, since i started, i hadn't paid any tax, not put on BR or anything, i filled a P46 in the day i started, i questioned my employer as to why i wasn't paying any, they couldn't offer an explanation, then yesterday, i picked up my pay slip and had been hit with a £280 cut in my wage for the week for the tax. Now i'd have expected them to at least put me on a higher rate for the rest of the tax year to make up for what i hadn't paid, not take almost a full weeks wage off me, how they expect me to live this week is beyond me, luckily, i've got some savings for a holiday, not that i want to dip into them, but i'm going to have to this week :(

I'm sorry, but you knew you were getting paid more than you should be yet you didn't think to save any of it each week for when this happened? :o
