My girlfriend (so not a misses quite yet) doesn't presently earn more than me - she's an undergraduate with zero income whereas I'm a postgraduate with a stipend.

When she graduates this summer she'll most probably be starting a grad scheme where she'll be earning more than me (probably not considerably, I'm on £18k untaxed, she will be on up to £28k, taxed).

But the gap will only get bigger as she'll have a steep curve for her income whereas for three years I'll still be on the same. Then after I graduate I'll start earning more, but it'll definitely be less than her (very unlikely that I'll start on £30k+, especially if I remain in academia).

For me it'll just feel a bit strange that she'll be earning more than me, are there any men out there where this is the state of play in your relationship?

When you graduate you hope you will find a job and won't end up in the dole queue or working behind a bar, filled with people drinking away their sorrows of unemployment? ;)

I earn plenty more than my O/H because I am super alpha.

Fairly certain that the chances of that are slim considering that I am doing a worthwhile qualification from a top university, but thanks :p

My wife earns more than me and has done so for some time. She currently earns about £20k more than me, but in January that will rise (as my salary will decrease significantly) to about £80k more than me if you take her bonus structure into consideration.

Does it matter to me?

Nope, as we have no demarcation on whose salary belongs to who, we are a family unit and our income belongs to us as a unit, not to each of us individually. In fact because she has such a decent salary is why we can afford for me to effectively quit work and study without it affecting our lifestyle adversely.

I can't really understand why men get hung up on their earning potentials compared to their girlfriends and wives anyway, what does it matter.

I have a friend who's missus is on a high 5 figures salary and I quote "and she only works part time!" she is a director at some media company.

Even though he is not on a bad wage himself (£40k), she's still on double his salary. He doesn't see it as a problem, this isn't the 50's anymore,

My girlfriend currently earns about 1k more than me per year, but her benefits aren't quite as good and neither is her sports and social department at work.

But she is training to be a ACCA qualified accountant so will eventually be earning 10k+ more than me!

My wife earns about $90k a year more than me. I earn a good wage and we're both pretty comfortable with that.

OP - why would it be strange that one of the partners earns more?

Well I suppose it's because my mum has never worked, my dad is the sole earner and if I have a child with my girlfriend (years off...) then I'd like her to be able to leave her job (at least for a few years). But if she's on £60k++ by then and I'm on significantly less (impossible to estimate as it depends on what I do which is as yet undecided) then it'd be madness.

Quoted for the truth it is!

I've recently taken a step back from the IT business side of things and am now doing a much more physical job and earning roughly the same as I was sitting in the office. My OH has now graduated and is completing her first year in her new profession as an ODP and at the moment she's on slightly more than me however within the next few years her income will increase substantially compared to mine. I'm not hung up on this as she's worked/studied hard to get this and deserves it. At the end of the day we're a family unit (me, her, and our moggie :p) so what difference does it make who earns the most?
