Socket 775 mobo with lots of onboard IDE and SATA ports

It will have to be something based on the NVidia N650 SLi chipset, but personally, I'd buy a P35 board eg. OcUK IP35-Pro (6 SATA ports) and a PCI PATA card.

NVidia N650 SLi, despite it's faults, should be perfectly fine for a fileserver, a P35 won't do any better job

Yes, but would you honestly buy an N650 SLi board now? Especially when you can have a P35 board for the same or less?

For a fileserver that is probably not overclocked, and if I needed the ATA ports - then yes, sure. Why not. I have a Gigabyte P35 board as well as my P5N-E SLI. They both do the job just fine. Today I'd buy X38 or X48 though

I agree that either board would be suitable, overclocked or not really. It very much depends on how desperately you want those two extra on-board PATA ports in favour of the extra two on-board SATA ports on most P35 boards.

Thanks guys I think I might stagger the upgrade but buying a PCI-SATA controller and then go for the upgrade in a couple of months time.

Interesting pointes though thanks guys
