Is it sensible to get a new socket 775 motherboard or are the processors worthless. I was considering the Asus P5Q Deluxe P45 Socket 775 for £80 with RAID etc :)

socket 775 processors are still current tech.

Some folks on here going to disagree with that.

If you need to buy both a processor and a motherboard go i3/i5 at least.

In some parts of the world a sharp stick is still current tech, :D

But on a more serious note - the advice you have been given is quite sound. That being said if a motherboard is the only thing you are going to be needing then go for it. I have mates that game with E8400 processors and they have no hit on FPS in game. True the CPU is over clocked and both chaps have good graphic cards but a good graphic card is required with any system to max out modern (newish) games yeah.

How does the latest socket 775 cpus compare to the current cpus. Or are there 775 cpus that are current. I see OCuk seem to be selling a few quite a few £s not sure if thats' old stock for suckers

Unless you already have a quad 775 then I can't see that a new mobo at £85 makes any sense.

The following combo would take all your current kit, is a quad, will oc to at least 3.6Ghz probably 3.7-3.8 and will blow an E8400 out of the water and match Q6600 performance for a cost of £102 in total.

This isnt bad advice if you are on a low end 775, but if it is a lower end dual core, say anything below a E8200 then THIS LINKwould be an even better bet.
That board is just as good for dual core as the P5Q series of motherboards.

Wouldnt say old stock for suckers, more something for everyone.

The i range is better no doubt but 775 can old its own in a lot of situations depending on what 775 processor it is.

MrBlobby what kit do you currently have mate? That will make this discussion a little more focused and productive.

+1. Yes, knowing what 775 cpu we're talking about would help plus what your uses are. If its gaming then you increasingly need three or more cores.

I've a Asrock 775 DualVST with 6400 Dual Duo processor 2 gb 5300 ram :) and a just bought a second hand geforce 9600 graphics card but everything doesn't seem to be as sharp as it should be :(

If you over clock the CPU you should be all good - the ram is not great but it will do for now. Not sure about the graphic card as I never owned one - had a 9800 card not the 9600 range. So someone else will have to comment about the card.

The long and the short of it mate is this. Next generation of CPU is your time to get that upgrade. Do it one time. DDR3 ram, motherboard and CPU the whole system. I guess you could still keep the graphic card but if possible I would suggest you bight the bullet and upgrade that too.

Maybe not what you wanted to hear but ... :)

To quote this for a second time, easily your bet bet now I know.
Then sell you old stuff and buy a graphics card and RAM, sorted

If its the stock heatsink, and I doubt it is, then retail versions of a processor comes with a stock heatsink.

If its an aftermarket cooler, if you got it new then you should have got brackets that let it fit, if you only have the socket 775 fitting then if you cant buy fittings then its not going to fit :(

OK now know where we are. Your mobo is actually the 775Dual-VSTA with DDR and DDR2 ram slots and AGP and PCI-e gcard slots. That mobo won't exceed 300FSB without a hardware mod. We'll forget that mod. So oc'ing that E6400 on your current board wouldn't hit more than 2.4Ghz. Not really worth the bother.

If you can pick up any E5xxx cpu for peanuts, say £20 or less, then that's the cheapest option. Due to its high multi you can be certain of 3.1Ghz and it may even hit 3,3Ghz depending how far that chip will go on stock voltage.

As regards your 9600 gcard it is really well past the end of its gaming life. Especially so if its AGP. Your posts here meet the criteria for Members Market so just activate your trust and see what’s available in the way of cheap gcards. There's a modded bios for your board that allows it to handle PCI-e ATi 4 series cards up to a 4850 and some 5 series so any of those or any 7 series Nvidia should allow you play almost all games. Only at low res, low settings, but fully playable.

If your current 9600 is PCI-e then the option suggested in my earlier post is open to you right away or as soon as you have a PCI-e gcard. As your current ram is 5300 DDR2 that also is OK for using in a new Asrock N68C-S UCC/AMD x4 630 combo.

Those are your options but forget a 775 quad such as a Q6600 as it’s not worth it given the low oc’ing potential of your mobo with that chip.

BTW here's a link to oc'ing with your current mobo

My main problem is I can't get a working graphics card. Please tell me more about the hardware mod sounds interesting.

Actually think I'll best buy a new kit sell this one off :)

I bust my VGA output on my graphics card by pushing a cable with a bent over pin :( Wierd thing was it would display the bios ok, then the main boot up screen went blank odd as a box of frogs. (busted the VGA output on my laptop too)
