The few who saw my other thread might know why... but I need a new motherboard to work with my Q6600 that supports at least 2 X SLI!

It's been a while since I've really looked into mobos and which one I need since this last one was kinda chosen for me because a friend of mine had this one extra after an order screw up! But... there really don't seem to be many Socket 775 motherboards that do SLI? I realise they must be quite old by now but there definitely don't seem to be many around lol

Any suggestions?

Assuming you want to continue using DDR2, then the "best" options are boards using the nvidia 750i and 780i chipsets. However, i wouldn't particularly recommend any of these as they are not particularly good boards (have a 780i myself) and they are no longer produced (so you will have to buy second hand - so no warranty).

Another option is to try and make your existing (presumably intel) board SLI - however this requires a board with at least dual x8 PCIE slots and is very much an unofficial hack.

Otherwise, I would suggest waiting until January 9th (release date of intel sandy bridge) and either pick up a new sandy bridge system (with an SLI board) or a cut price current-gen system (the best deals will be second hand).

Yeah a 780i does seem to be the way ahead unless I wanna upgrade a bunch of things like motherboard, ram and CPU at the same time :(

Any examples of what the best of those 780i mobos were?

They are all pretty much the same tbh. They all overclock OK and the northbridges get very hot. Personally I would go with the ASUS (I have the XFX), but there isn't much to separate them.

That said, I would not spend more than £50 on a 780i board. Past this level you may just want to consider upgrading your system and selling your Q6600 (if its a G0 stepping you should be able to get £80 for it).

May I ask what the make and model number of your current motherboard is?

Its an Asus P5N-E. It has everything I need but just not in the right places lol

I was looking for exactly the same thing, but couldn't find a board that seemed suitable. At least not for the right price. In the end I decided a full upgrade was a much better idea.

(Got an MSI P55-GD80, an i5 760, and 4Gb Corsair RAM arriving in time for christmas :D )

Yeah, if I hadn't already spent over £500 this month on various things (still need to buy tax for my car too lol) then an upgrade might be an option ;/

As it is I might give some different SATA cables a try but failing that I might have to see if I can buy my old PC up and use it as a NAS box of sorts.
