Socket AM2 Platform Release brought forward to 23rd May - unofficial

If it is ready then I don't see the harm in it. I'm not much of an expert on chip manufacturing but since it is only being brought forwards by around 2 weeks I doubt it makes much of a difference in terms of how mature the technology will be, that would be a rather short time in which to be making major changes to the manufacturing processes. From that (probably incorrect) assumption I'd say that the extra couple of weeks would be more for improving marketing and getting initial supplies out to vendors rather than any large-scale changes in design.

As I understand it, AM2 has been ready for a while, but AMD have been waiting for DDR2 memory to improve. It's only the memory controller and pin count that has changed from the current models.

Like Dan said this is more of a paving the way release than anything else. The chips wont be much faster, just use ddr 2 and have a new pin design. But when the new chips do come out, people who have this stuff will only need to change the cpu and manufactres wont have to change anything.

true the chips wont be much faster, but I bet the inclusion of DDR 2 800 will make an overall faster system. There wouldnt be much point in even releasing it if there would be a substantial performance increase.
