Socks and stuff!

That's good advice.. Carry some talcum powder and keep your feet dry. I walked 25 miles in april when I went to wales, and thank you talcum powder. I'm sure my feet would have been ripped to be bits without..

Do you put the talc directly on the foot or on the sock? I always thought talc directly on the foot would congeal somewhat in the sweat...?

During our basic training we were always told to fill our socks with it.

Don't know why I never done it this Sunday! :/

Yeah mate, has to be in full kit with 10kg dead weight.

Nice, will give them a bash. One of the girls on it, has complained for every pair she has and been given her money back everytime! Damn *****! :p

Complained about what ?:p

They are basically 2 thick socks sewn together (just a rough idea, theres probably a lot more to it) and instead of the socks rubbing against your feet causing blisters, the socks rub against each other so your feet remain blister free, I didn't get one blister :)

Get yourself one pair and see what they are like, if you like them get more!

She complained it gave her blisters, as they come with a blister free warrantey she got her money back. She hasn't had a blister yet! :p

Will get a pair and see how they go.

I sold hiking boots and equipment for a few years. If there's one thing I learned it's that feet are annoyingly random :p

The Coolmax liner + hiking sock is definitely the best way to go, IMO. Then add a moleskin to areas that are prone to blistering for added protection.

Boots though......advice is almost pointless. They can feel like slippers at first and then suddenly shred your feet on the trail. Or they can be horrible for the first 50 miles and then suddenly become absolutely heavenly once they've broken in and conformed to your feet. Feet are all so different....even your own two feet are different to each other. I NEVER get blisters - I could wear 3 sizes too small and line them with sandpaper and I would be fine. The missus, on the other hand, could wear custom made boots lined with exquisite panda fur and she would still get blisters galore. She's tried absolutely EVERY trick in the book.

A good boot salesman knows his stock and can make recommendations based on the shape of your foot, arch, heel, etc. Then they can fine tune the fit with custom cut insoles, socks, etc. But even then there are no guarantees once you've gone a few miles. My mindset was always to assume they're gonna hurt for a while, but they'll break in and your skin will toughen up in the problem areas.

Smartwool PHD socks, i was given a pair free to try a while ago, and have since bought several pairs! So comfortable on the hill!

You need to get those boots broken in. Use them for trips to the newsagent or whatever to start with.

I love my 1000mile running socks. Top stuff.

Before I used them I'd get blisters every time I went for a run with just normal sports socks on. The whole two layer thing really works though. The outer layer moving with the shoe, the inner layer moving with your foot.

Massive bump here.

Would Bridgedale socks be overkill as a general, all-purpose sock? My commute to work is going to involve quite a bit more walking soon and I want decent socks - preferably something that is going to protect the parts prone to blisters.

Having a liner and an outer's the important thing, if that's not clear enough already.

Not necessarily.

A single layer of decent merino wool socks can be just as effective. Keeping them dry is the best advice.

OP: Find out what works for you, but don't take this two layer business as gospel. TBH the 2 layer thing is a bit oldskool now.

Changing socks regularly is the most effective thing probably.

Edit: just seen it's a bump :p nvm!

Bit of a thread necro here... I've started walking and I'm walking about 4 and a half miles a day. My feet and legs are starting to hurt, especially my shins. I'm reluctant to take a break from it, but I do want to reduce the pain if possible.

Will insoles, such as these or these (I saw some mentioned up in the thread) have a positive effect, or are they only going to prevent foot pain? Its my shins more than anything that hurt, foot pain is negligible in comparison. I'm not sure I can see a difference between full strike and double strike either...
