Sold my 8800...

errm, loads of people are running stalker at 1920x1200 on x1900xt's and have it running fine, shock horror. its also a pretty poor looking game with the only graphically good part of it being HDR, which sometimes makes things look awful(couple of the flame effects look dodgey with HDR on), and some look great. but without it on a freaking x800 could probo play it maxed out. 99% of games don't have HDR, it doesn't change the textures, or characters or anything, just the lighting. its nice but not essential and utterly rapes performance.

as for Sup com, it isn't graphically demanding at all, low fps in sup com = high unit count and limited cpu power. its a widely known CPU limited game. i don't get how people look at RTS's and say, ooo, soo pretty. sure it looks better than old rts's, but its a top down view, with little detail on any units with utterly bland and boring landscapes with next to no detail. if you think thats graphically taxing you are, in fact, utterly insane.

other than oblivion and R6 vegas you'd be hard pushed to find more than a couple of games that won't run with high levels of aa/af on a x1900xt at high res.

CNC3 won't change things, rts's are cpu limited, bioshock has been pushed, as have a few others, i don't think theres much else out that soon but i'm not sure. 8800gts is overkill for 99.9% of games out now. as for oblivion, it runs like crap, with low fps, but its a VERY SLOW GAME and more than playable in top quality WITH the high res texture packs. you can't just generically say, its under 60fps, its crap. generally only fps's, some racing sims and some other games "need" high fps. i'd also be hard pushed to name any of those types of games which don't get high fps on a x1900xt right now.

with that said, the 8800/r600 sounds like they will indeed be needed in not to long if you want to play high res + aa/af. because there are some stonkingly powerful engines coming out this year, just a shame most have been pushed back a few months. ET:QW was looking like Q2, as possibly was crysis, and bioshock, they all sound like Q3 at least now, bunch of other games have slipped too :(

I knew as soon as clicked submit, I was gonna get a lickin'. Fair does, but nawh, i'd love a 8800GTX. Absolutely nothing wrong with either ATi or Nvidia, I just think there is more to it, or at least there has been with me.

no he's right, there simply no doubting that the 8800gts/gtx is very powerful, it is next gen compared to the x1900 series. i guess the main issue is we don't have a single "next gen" game yet, which is why it doesn't feel any better. 100 up to 150fps on CS:S doesn't do it for me, the dx10 update is coming this year but after ep2 right? but that will be "next gen" i guess. crysis looks pretty damned sweet, but isn't out. its more powerful, but i can't name any games that use it AND need it.

as for IQ, tbh, i'm not saying it is better, or not, i don't know. its hard to judge the differences at long viewing distances as i don't spend ages checking. i see anandtech's pictures and honestly, i can't tell which one is actually better. because, most of the zoomed in long range bits look crap both ways. If thats what everyone is banging on about then to me IQ is identical because 98% of the time that stuff doesn't even get noticed. if it renders 99.9% of the screen and stuff you look at most of the time in almost identical quality, and only little aerials on a far roof look slightly less crap i wouldn't call that better IQ. i played sup com on x1900xt/8800(yes i know pot, kettle, its some ironic colour i think :p , card died and built second system and got the gtx for £300 so if i sell i won't lose money, my brain used the logic that the card was free ) and they looked the same, plenty of games run better, but not a case of not playable to playable. cs:s looks worse.

i read something about weird fog or something, is it a CS:S update bug, a 8800 bug, a vista bug. hadn't played it in ages.

Or if you're playing it on XP and have the source fog issue :(

I have the say the IQ difference from my 6800GT was noticeable, even on a cheap(ish) monitor.

Valve say it is a NVidia issue. NVidia say it is a Valve issue :(
