Solo Travellers

Can people please stop saying Australia and New Zealand is a 'good choice'? He has TWO WEEKS. By the time he's got the airport, done a 24-36 hour flight and got over his initial Jet Lag he's 3 days into the trip. Then he's got to do it all again to get home. Meaning he's got a whole what, 8-9 days out there? Not exactly going to get to know people in 8-9 days. And it's a LONG way to go for just 8-9 days of real trip.

Leave Aus and New Zealand to when you have a month to spare and go closer to home until you do.

Do you research and stay in some of the bigger hostels if you can. You can meet some really interesting people, travellers likes yourself from all the over the world, catch up for drinks/dinner, visit sights, swap travelling tips, stories etc, as well as doing your own thing.

14days minus 3days for travelling/jet lag does not equal 8-9 days, the value your looking for is 11.

he won't have to waste 3days in australia preparing for the flight/jet lag home, he does that recovery back at home.

3 days either side.

Just thinking about when I went - Sunday was spent getting to Heathrow, getting into a Hotel, etc. 1 day gone. Monday morning boarded a flight. 24 hours later so Tuesday evening in Aus, I arrived in Melbourne.

3 days.

When you did it, did you have a different experience?

Presumably he has to be back at work after his 2 week holiday so its reasonable to have a similar calculation the other side.

14-3-3 = 8. But notice I said 8-9 days, it an estimate.

Either way you are still looking at 10 days MAX to actually do stuff. Just not long enough given the cost of the flights, the length of the flights and the distance between everything.

I don't suffer from jet lag, and nor do I need to waste my time in a airport hotel because I can just stay at my brother house in enfeild.

so when I went I just drove to london, left my car at brothers, and he takes me to the airport.

so no, I don't need 3days either side.

Thats great, how useful. I'm sure the OP can stay at his brothers house in Enfield as well

Question: When did you go to Aus and how long for?

Even best case scenario it takes 2 days to get there and 2 days to get back door to door?

A fortnight in Oz is fine as long as he knows it will be a relatively expensive trip for such a small amount of time

I plan to go again towards the end of the year and only for ~ 2 weeks

3 weekends + 10 working days = 16 days, about 24-30 hrs travel each and one day off for when I return so I'll get about 12-13 days , I don't tend to suffer from jet lag either, tbh I think it's really worth it even if it is a slog

Just think its madness, heck I thought I was pushing it with 15 days in California last year let alone Australia. I love Australia, it remains my favourite place but I refuse to go back until I can get more than 2 weeks, it's such a waste of time and money if you treat it like a normal holiday with just 2 weeks.

It depends what you want out of the trip and how much cash you are prepared to waste imo, I'm lucky that I have a good friend living there who will put me up so I only need pay for food and activities, the flight will hopefully cost <£1000, a price I'm prepared to pay to spend time with my mate for a couple of weeks in a nicer climate doing the odd day trips , diving , bodyboarding or simply chilling on the jetty fishing for squid.

I even enjoy a lot of the flying and airport time too

I don't count the getting back part as part of the holiday, because its not.

If I for example book 13 nights in a hotel I fully expect the full 13 nights, not wasting 2 days of it traveling back home, and neither should the OP.

Luckily have family who live out there, so just stay at their place.

Yes, it's another holiday thread.

I'd like to go away at the end of this summer. Not sure for how long, maybe a fortnight, it depends how much time I can get off work.

So far I've saved up a couple of grand so I should have around £4/£5k by the summer.

I plan to travel alone. I'm open to any suggestions right now; beach holiday, city break, cultural, adventure, etc...

Any suggestions?

I go to China every couple of years and always enjoy it, the culture is so much different to the west.

Language could be a problem depending whereabouts you go but you could go to China-lite (Hong Kong) where English is spoken fairly extensively.
