Quoted for Truth :-

It's about time the British people started to ask what the hell we are paying our taxes for with regards to institutions like the Royal Navy. It's not so ratings can cruise around the world getting ****ed in exotic locations, it's to keep the shipping lanes open to allow the passage of free trade which is the life blood of this nation. So in short get out there and do your bloody job and if the Politicians will not let you do it or you can't do it then let us know and we will cut our cloth according to our means and turn you into a coastal defence force. How much longer do we have to put up with organisations like the Police etc. standing there like pillocks as a bunch of spotty students ransack a building in the middle of London and refuse to act. What the hell are we paying you lot for? Christ knows what Nelson would have thought of the current bunch of pacifists infesting the Admiralty. Top Tip next time the Iranians try to take our sailors hostage blow them out of the water that's what England expects...Do your duty.

Of course it is! I had a great time!:D

Hi magick,

Can I just reply to your points with:
"I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that'

I don't think the person you have quoted has read anything more than a newspaper article on the issue which is most likely wildly inaccurate

I'm glad you did. That's because we had to do all the donkey work whilst you were sunning yourself....:p

Magick, there is no truth in that rant and if you cannot realise that then I feel sorry for you. The RN cannot police the entire world and to expect them to do so is foolish.

Pick your branch, take your chance :p

The funny part is that I only joined the RN becaue I was 16 and my parents(well my mum) wouldn't give their consent to me join your lot.(early 90's you guys still deployed to NI.)

I came back from my 1st delpoyment which was in the Adriatic and still wanted to transfer so I put the request in, had the interview, fitness tests to make sure I was ready for the PRC and just as I got a date for the PRC I was drafted to a ship that was delpoying to the caribbean 7 months over the winter.

Decided that being a Matelot wasn't so bad afterall.:D

Well, I would rather have been cruising around the Caribbean nabbing traffickers than wandering around the Northern Iraq, Bosnia and the Congo getting shot at, which is what I was doing during the 90's.

Still we had our moments, Arctic training in Norway....Jungle training in Borneo...great fun....;)

The Malaysian Navy captured some pirates a couple of weeks ago in Oman waters and brought them back to Malaysia , seven of them in total but three are under the age of 18.

They're being charged under the firearms act for firing at the Navy , bad luck for them I guess as the laws on firearms are very strict here.

Any person who at the time of his committing or attempting
to commit or abetting the commission of a scheduled offence
discharges a firearm with intent to cause death or hurt to any
person, shall, notwithstanding that no hurt is caused thereby, be
punished with death

Penalty for accomplices in case of discharge of firearm
3A. Where, with intent to cause death or hurt to any person, a
firearm is discharged by any person at the time of his committing
or attempting to commit or abetting the commission of a scheduled
offence, each of his accomplices in respect of the offence present
at the scene of the commission or attempted commission or
abetment thereof who may reasonably be presumed to have known
that such person was carrying or had in his possession or under his
custody or control the firearm shall, notwithstanding that no hurt
is caused by the discharge thereof, be punished with death, unless
he proves that he had taken all reasonable steps to prevent the
discharge.

I agree with the comment quoted by Magick. I often wonder why we even have armed forces deployed around the world anymore seeing as how most of the time they do nothing of worth. Spent lives to take ground only to have it retaken by the enemy mere weeks later due to a lack of manpower/equipment and a weak politcal will/reluctance to do what is truely needed. Navy patrols that don't actually engage with the enemy, instead they try to 'arrest' them because it's the moral thing to do; send them home to be punished, only to have them back out on the seas doing the same thing they were before. If you're not going to actually fight or fully commit to a war then why bother beign there in the first place? What's considered combat operations today is laughable compared to battles and wars of the past. Everything has gone so passive. Ether fully commit or don't bother. This police the world, rebuild the crappy countries ******** we currently engage in is pathetic.

Well at least these 4 won't get off lightly - don't think it'll be a deterrent to more trying their luck though. Not sure how many have been previously convicted, and what sentence they got
