Just wanted to confirm I`ve tried everything before I return a possibly faulty HDD.
Bought a whole new system including a Western Digital Caviar Black 640Gb back in July from Overclockers. It was assembled and Windows 7 Evaluation was installed and until now everything was working fine.
When my new copy of Windows 7 arrived I tried to install it, intending to format the drive and start afresh. I unplugged my 2 other SATA HDD`s and my one IDE HDD to avoid any confusion, just leaving the Caviar.
Started the install but Windows couldn`t find any drives. I plugged in one of my others and that was found ok. I tried another SATA cable, a different socket, another power plug on a different line but still nothing. The drive can be felt whirring or humming as normal.
It is recognised in the BIOS of my ASUS P-6T but not by the Windows install disc. It`s plugged into the same bank of SATA sockets as my 2 Optiarc drives and they are working and recognised fine.
I then removed it and plugged it into my old PC to see if it was recognised in that. On boot up it is found along with my Samsung SATA boot disc but it just causes the PC to reboot and just carries on doing this ad infinitum. As soon as I disconnect it the PC boots up fine.
Is there anything else I can try, have I missed something or is it dead and needs returning.
Any help would be appreciated
