Hi,

Click HERE- TO THE DON/DONS if this is breaking the rules please take it down, im only asking for advise on my design as iv got through half of it and I need ideas on how to spruse it up. Thanks :)

Could somebody critique my simple design website. I started developing it a while ago but had to put it on hold as I had other commitents, id say my web design skills are fairly minimum atm, im not a graphics person at all but im ok on the development site.

That sidebar will be used as a PHP newsfeed eventually but nothing in there at the moment.

Obviously you can see the content is currently being worked on and I need to start adding images to spruse it up abit

Im not 100% on the way it looks though or even the body color.

Could anyone give me any feedback/tips?

Dont laff please :(

1. Not sure why you're talking about yourself in third person.
2. The design itself is really plain and lacking. It's basically just a box with text. It's not memorable in any way. Go look at some css sites for inspiration.
3. Your font size is too small.
4. Your html isn't too bad. A bit of bloat but far better than your design.

1. I thought this would be better than saying I do this, I do that, I can provide this, I can provide that
2. I agree, its just finding some inspiration like you said,
3. I have tried the next size up but kinda looks too big then
4. Thanks

My brother is currently looking at doing some of the design work on it at the moment, he's good at that, where as my area is more the development.

He can stick any work into his portfolio then

No offence but forum rules state that :-

No promotion of business interests
You may not promote any website or business you have a financial or other interest in, or use the popularity of this community to help build one of your own. The forums are here to allow people to freely share knowledge, not provide them with personal financial gain, or free advertising.

Sorry for being a killjoy. ;)

Oops!

Sorry, ill take it down, i honestly wanted feedback on the website itself/design etc not this. sorry peeps!

It only looks too big because you don't have the correct spacing.

For example, edit your p.maintext with the following:

Change font size to 0.8em
Add line-height: 1.5em
Change your bottom padding to 1.5em

You really shouldn't be relying on p tags for default sizing though. You should set a base font size and go from there.

Ask a Don.
I've seen people ask for crits on personal sites like that before and nobody minded. This is a PC enthusiasts forum, I don't think many of us will be wanting to contact you to fix our computers ;)

As I said, not wanting to sound like a killjoy but as Trip says, maybe check with a don to see if it is acceptable. :)

With regards to the whole talking about me in third person, would you just re-word it to make it so its me writing about myself?

IE there will be lots of "i do this, i do that" sort of thing?

tbh, I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer on this as there is no correct answer and I probably shouldn't have said anything but I did :)

Personally, I would use first person as I would be talking about myself. It'll make you sound far more personable and friendly although at the expense that it may seem a little less professional.

I might try it, ill do a test page and copy the content written in first person to see what it looks like, try not to use "I" so much ;)

Done a few more "smaller" updates:

http://www.dmoranda.co.uk/newsite3/index.php

However I need some inspiration on what I can do to improve the design of things as its looking abit bland :\. I think adding a few images will make it look better, but again I want to give it the feel of a nice looking contemporary (modern) website, at the moment its feeling quite old.

Im not great with design work on photoshop, I know the basics.

Can somebody help or give me some tips on how to spruse it up abit?

Thanks :)

Done a few design updates...

www.dmoranda.co.uk/newsite3

They can be seen here, I still need to do quite abit:

Edit the outside of the container so get the diag stripes brighter at the top

Fiddle with the design to get it looking super

Do the banner as you can see, I dont really have anything worthy of being there ;)

Get images layed out the pages correctly

Finish off the content

Add other bits

From a design perspective tho, is it looking better than what it originally was? for those that can remember what it did look like originally?

Any feedback on what I can do to spruse it up more would be helpful and appriciated :)

No one?? I just need some feedback on how I can improve my design?

Ignore the weird footer and sidebar issues and the banner that needs to be done, and the issues in IE, looking at the design, is there anyway I can improve it to look better?

Yeah I could change the news feed abit. Im not sure how to lay it out really.

What else could I do to jazz the site up abit, the banner is about 50% complete, and I need to find some images to whack on the page but im not sure where the best position is to place said images :(

Iv run into abit of design block, this is why I keep failing to finish off my sites.

Get rid of the ¦ everywhere.

Makes it look like something out of the 80's.

If you need to seperate things, use a solid | instead, but even that is gash.

Change the link colour, as it looks hard to see on the nav bar.

Brighter background.
Bigger heading.
Ditch the left hand column completely.
Get a logo made for the header.

Just a few things :)

Just looks a bit dull right now.

Cool, thanks, I shall work on these :)

What do I do with the left hand columb if I ditch it, im going to need to replace it with something otherwise its either going to leave a big gap, or the main body will be stretched and the text will be wider.

If anyone has any other pointers please let me know.
