So i am looking at getting a new pc but i am interested as to what sort of performance difference i will get compared with my laptop....
So i am looking at getting either i5 or Phenom II 955/965
The specs of my laptop are in my sig
All i do is encode files to dvds using DVD Flick.......So if someone could encode a file onto a dvd and tell me how long it took them then i could compare it to my laptop.
Thanks

well the file i use is about 700mb
How big was the file you used......My laptop takes 5 hrs ¬¬ i need a new pc lol
Does the amount of ram you have make a difference in DVD Flick?

The files i use are between 700mb and 1.5 gig, you should try using ConvertXToDVD. and yes ram does make a difference.

A 700mb avi file takes about 6 minutes to encode to dvd on my rig using convertxtodvd.

EDIT: The burning of the resultant file is gonna take a bit longer, first time ive used this blu ray drive to burn a disc.

WOW...........Do you have to pay ConvertXtodvd?..........I might consider an i7 now actually lol as 6mins is amazing compared to mine

Its £34.99 for the download, another £6.00 or so if you want a dvd sent out along with the order, personally ive not used dvd fick so im afraid i cant compare them.

You can get it for free if you know where to look.

use convertxtodvd all the time, a dvd for 700mb takes around 15 mins with my processor as in the signature, which isnt too bad considering its poor cache!

6 hours to burn a dvd! Even my old AMD Athlon 4200 X2 didnt take near that long! Burning stuff on a laptop is fail anyway.

ConvertXtodvd is by far the best program for burning dvds.

phenom II x3 720 be @ 3.3GHz
4gb ram

dvd flick - started ffmpeg.exe using a lot of cpu, but only on one core. Have had the odd spike to 58% total cpu, normaly at 40-50%.

encoding 700mb/2hrs file.
elapsed time: 7m
% complete: 22% (~ 94FPS)

:-/

I'm hoping that dvd flick or ffmpeg is just really slow compared to whatever convertXtodvd uses.

:o

edit / update:

convertX is encoding the same file at 2x dvd flick's speed (looking at fps). Total cpu usage is slightly higher spending most time at 50-60%

How about using Badaboom to convert to a file type? Not sure if it has the option you want but Cuda encodes sooo fast on mine 175 FPS using a GTX 260.

Using other converter apps it is literaly double the time. Obviously you need a Nvidia card. This is one of the many reasons i prefer Nvidia

Well my new desktop won't be having a gpu so badaboom is out of the question....I am thinking of getting the Athlon II x3 425..will I be able to get good times with this??
