As title, I’m looking for a fun car for around the 5K mark. It doesn’t have to be a hot hatch type car, anything that’s going to put a smile on my face in the morning and is not likely to cost a small fortune to maintain/service. I only do about 120 miles in a normal week so fuel isn’t of huge concern.

I'd have a Honda S2000 on this budget and with that mileage requirement and criteria. It'll be an old one, but they still look the part and are immense fun.

I don't think an S2000 is suitable for his requirements - he has a budget of 5k - finding a decent S2000 for that will be next to impossible.

Factor in high insurance costs and other general pieces that go along with the S2000, and it may not be the wisest choice!

S2000 at £5k? They can't be that cheap now, surely - especially for anything that isn't a nail. Plus the insurance may put him off.

I'm gunna pimp the MR2 mk3 - not the most powerful of the MR2's, but it's always nice having a soft top :) Although try and find one with a hard-top, air-con and full leather; easily done for £5k.

depends what you define fun as? fast? good handling? an amusing registration plate?

a lot of people say mx-5s are fun, i say not!! they are good to drive and handle well but its not fun! its cold, noisy, bumpy, only 2 seats and always falling to pieces - i am of course talking about mine though.

Type-R Honda, either DC2 Integra or EK9 Civic. Both are epic fun, will put a smile on your face for sure, and won't cost the earth to run.
Neither however are RWD or super fast straight line dragsters.

Insurance is the only killer, they really are ridiculous on that front. I think its one of the reasons why they are so cheap to buy though. His budget is "around £5000" by the way. Which means he can look at S2000's stickered at £6k, of which there most definitely are worthwhile examples. :)

Not sure what you mean by other bits and pieces, they are superbly reliable cars and once insured will not be any more expensive to keep on the road than other japanese performance cars being suggested here.
