Something wrong with Sky HD?

After watching a good hour of HD stuff it seems to me that there is little difference. The cricket, for example, most of the time is just a blurred as it's used to be, it's only the on-screen text that looks sharp. I think the only thing to blow me away completely was Planet Earth on BBC HD. Apart from that though, I haven't been "that" impressed.

It's almost as if every channel is a mix of HD and non-HD. Some shots are awful, some are incredible.

What are your thoughts?

As far as I know, a lot of supposedly HD stuff is actually upscaled SD. Also, Sky play with bitrates quite a lot, a low bitrate broadcast will appear blurry on grass etc., even in HD.

if you're watching something on the HD channels press the i button.
If it is actually HD "HD" will be displayed in the top right of the info box.
a lot of the time when there's nothing important on they will leave it in SD.
As far as the difference is concerned i noticed it quite a lot and most of my mates have.
watch the champs league game tonight will be good.

The football was pretty amazing.

As before though, there is no difference with close-up shots, but when you can see the whole pitch with the stands in the background it is incredible.

I'm guessing that's because not all the cameras in the stadium are HD. Hence they just use HD for the main ones covering the whole pitch.

Wish I had Sky HD :(

the thing is when you watch HD tv such as sport and discovery channel etc you're looking for the difference between that and SD.
What you need to do is look at how it would look normally then you'll see it.
So when the footy's on go onto the relevant SS1 SD channel then flick back to the HD channel. You'll deffo notice.
As for close up shots, there is that much detail involved in a shot of one person so SD can handle that and will look alright anyway. It's when there's a lot of stuff going on in the picture that you'll notice.

If you cannot notice any difference they do you think it's worth continuing to pay for the HD service?

It just happens that when I first watched it, none of the programmes (bar Planet Earth) were in HD. It claims Stargate is in HD, but I've heard people saying it's actually filmed in SD.

Funnily enough, the HD films on Sky Movies HD have absolutely nothing on an HD-Filmed image. Does this mean that HD is sharper than film!?

***. tbh.

Ahh. For the win has been banned. Good riddance. To be honest. To be honest.

Well a mate of mine round the corner works for sky and has just had sky HD installed but he's only got a normal crt tv. I on the other hand have a sharp 32" GD7E, HD ready screen, so when it convenient I'm taking it round to his place, hooking it up and seeing wether this hd malarky is worth it.

I cannot get over how incredible BBC's Planet Earth is.

I think they must film it entirely in 1080i HD because it is just jaw dropping.

For me personally, the transition to HD is a bit like going from a low resolution on a computer screen to a higher one, or CRT to LCD. Everything seems sharper, smaller and more defined.
