Sond not working after a fresh install, could it be the XP disc?

I have done two re-installs on two computers one was a brand new PC and one old one with the same XP disc.

I installed the sound driver via device manager and update driver, on both occasions the sound is not working, why would the sound not work when the drivers are already been installed with no yellow question or exclamation marks?
