Hi chaps

I have just got a sony upscaling HDD TV recorder which can play DivX files via USB or can be saved from USB onto the HDD.

I tried to play Avi file using both USB and from HDD and it says "file type not supported" although it can see the file on the USB. I also tried Fat and Fat32 on the USB stick and a different Avi file with each.

I thought Avi was the same as DivX - did i just noob myself?

Is there a conversion from Avi->DivX?

if I remember correctly avi is a container format in the same way as mkv.

Hence a avi file could have divx encoded video contained within it but it could also have other codecs as well.

Alternatively there are several versions of the divx format so you could be trying to play back a version which isn't compatible with your player.

edit: run mediainfo against the files to see exactly what they are and then compare it with the list of supported codec varients in the manual for your player
