My mates sorting out a laptop for another mate. the thing is Windows ME (rofl) which is installed onto it is coming up with random errors all the time. He wants to install XP onto it. Im strongly against this idea - since i have a v.v.v.v.v.v.very old celeron my little brother uses for msn upstairs with a oc'ed 900mhz celly @ 1.184 and thats Terribly slow, he also reckons it has 2x5gb drives? i think this is just a partition - anyway. XP or 98se?

Guys its between 98se ME or XP we cant just get 2k :)

dear lord its like having to chose between the devil and the deep blue sea!
I'd say XP as 98 and ME won't run any of the new software out and XP is more stable etc, but then its gonna be more resorce hungery.

maybe give it up as not worth your time?

I recently installed XP on an old Compaq laptop with a 700Mhz P3, 128MB RAM, 12Gb hard drive and WLAN. It took a little while to do, but once its up and running, its fine to use for basic tasks - its perfectly useable.

On a clean install the mem usage was about 80MB average according to task manager, but after installing a few other bits (eg office and antivirus software), the mem usage now sits about 115MB (idle).

Obviously, using a few browsers and other programs eats away at the remainder and it starts paging. But its not all that bad for what it is.

This means that in its current state, it is only good for really basic stuff like office tasks and internet use. I am planning to get a 256Mb stick which should speed things up a lot :)

Why not? If you have a licence for XP Pro then you can use 2k legally. Its a much better option.

ermm, no, how did you work that out?

Also, XP will run just fine on a 700mhz, but you want 512mb at least to run smoothly.

Err, yes.

As stated in section 1.7 of the XP pro EULA:

1.7 Use of Previous Version Of SOFTWARE. If the COA which
accompanies the HARDWARE identifies the SOFTWARE as
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SOFTWARE, then in
lieu of installing and using Microsoft Windows XP
Professional SOFTWARE, you may install, use, access,
display and run the same language version of ONE
(1) of the following versions: Microsoft(R)
Windows(R) 2000 Professional, Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
NT Workstation version 4.0 or Microsoft(R) Windows(R)
98 (Second Edition) ("Downgrade Software") on the
COMPUTER, provided (1) you agree that Downgrade
Software support will NOT be provided hereunder by
Manufacturer, MS or Microsoft Corporation, their
affiliates or subsidiaries; (2) you agree that neither
Manufacturer, MS nor Microsoft Corporation are obligated
to provide you with the Downgrade Software or media;

As you can see, you can perrfectly legally use 2k on an XP licence.

If you can increase the RAM to at least 256 then put XP on, otherwise put 98SE on IMO. XP will run appallingly slowly with only 128MB of RAM.

Whats your definition of slow? I ran XP Pro with 96mb of RAM for three years. :D

I think you'll find you're sadly mistaken- it's perfectly legal.

As for the original question though, XP will run fine on it. Just nLite the install- cut all the extra languages out, ditch a few services here and there etc :)
