I managed to get hold of one of the new Sony PRS600 touchscreen readers. I would have waited til the price drops but I wanted it for an imminent long haul flight.
After a quick play here are some initial impessions.
- Much faster to refresh screens than the old 505
- Touchscreen works well but is more of a PDA style than an iphone. You get a stylus and though it works fine with fingers you need to be firmer and more decisive than with an iphone.
- The screen is a bit more reflective than the 505 but is no real issue unless you have a light shining directly on it.
- Keyboard, notes and dictionary all work well.
- I've thrown epub, rtf and a basic pdf at it so far, all worked though the large rtf was slower to load.
-Contrast is no worse than the 505 but this is still a weak area in ebook readers at the moment. Next gen screens need to have better contrast if readers are ever to become mainstream.
I'll be playing more over the weekend so if anyone has any questions or particular files they'd like to see if it can handle let me know.
