Well my unit arrived a coupel of hours ago, Delivey on a sunday ? weird I know.was some guy in an unmarked van

well, ill cut to the chase, its going back. seriously, I am never listening to a what hi-fi review again, Im sure there is some serious backhanders going on between mr sony and what hi-fi.

DVD playback, i compared it back to back with my Pioneer AV 565a which is hooked up with as QED silver ref scart cable. used Cars as a demo disc, exellent quality DVD

HDMI test (mark grant HDMI lead)

I tried it in the lowest resolution first, and was frankly appalled, sure the colurs were bright, but the amount of jaggies on display was just unwatchable as far as im concerned, so I swithed it to 720p, still no better, was getting feeling ripped off at this stage. finally i set it to 1080i, it was a huge improvent over the other 2 settings, the colours bright and vibrant, a lot more detailed, but still had the jaggies although a lot less prononced. I flicked over to the Pioneer and there really was no comparrison, it wiped the floor with the sony for picture quality, bear in mind this player is 5 years old and £250.

Scart test

same as the shocking lowest res HDMI test which is frankly carp

So as a DVD player the sony is pretty shocking, well below the really good £100 players out there, even if the HDD recording was amazing I would have to keep my pioneer for DVD playback.

Freeview and HDD recording

No once again I was expecting great things after reading the what hi-fi review, "amazing freeview picture and recordings indistingwishable from the original" when I first turned it on I thought there was a problem with my arial, the quality of the sinal was no where near as good as the intergrated unit in my TV (pannasonic tx52) I checked on my TV and no, the signal was fine. It wasnt terrible, just a lot more noise and pixelation then im used to.

I thought id give the recording mode a try out before I boxed it back up, on HQ mode its very dodgey, pixels all over the place, and very noticable change in image quality from the original source, so i swapped it over to HQ+, although it was better, it still was clearly lower quality then the source, on testing seens things would get quite messy.

Conclusion

Quite frankly how this machine got the reviews it did is a bit of a mystery, I know i am a fussy bugger when it comes to AV gear but all I wanted was a DVD player as good as my old pioneer and freview picture on par with the intergrated unit in my TV, not asking a lot I thought from a unit with a RRP of £400.

as it stands I am gutted to say the least, i am going to have to send it back, hopefully I wont get to much grief off the supplier.

A quick perusal of this here forum would have told you never to trust the hifi comics, especially What Hi-Fi.

The reviewers have to earn an income somehow....

Yes What Hi-Fi are defi Sony sponsored at the mo, check out the love in for all things Sony from the Bravia - Amp - unit you have. All are bettered in the real world.

Mind you did break the golden rule of getting an all in one for jobs that seperaes will always do better ;)

was thinking the same, I recently demo'd the new LCD what h-fi were wetting there pants over and was decidly unimpressed.

I know I broke the golden rule, im normally a seperates man through and through, but I thought this unit would at least be on a par with my pioneer DVD player, oh well.

Just need to find a decent recorder now, the one bit i did like about the sony was the menus and just the whole funtionalty, just a shame about the qualty

I got an old cheap pioneer DV-444 (was about £60) and it wipes the floor with any other DVD player i have compared it to so far..(other low end DVD players and my xbox360 and PC (ati x1900xt-x)).

Which is why am looking at getting one of the new pioneer DVD HDD recorders..(mainly looking at the DVR-540HX-S or DVR-545HX-S)

tis a bit strange that the first sony bravia was slated, but its follow up the V2000 was given tons of praise. That in itself was wierd, but then they give their DVD recorder and New £400 AV receiver top awards as well.

How are you sure you havent got a faulty unit - as you seem to be discrediting the design of the unit and Sony themselves.

I have had a Sony dvd/ hdd recorder for well over a year (the 710 - I believe the first freeview hdd/dvd recorder on the market) and while its not brilliant at changing dvd layers, the quality of its playback and recordings is nothing short of identical to the transmission quality (on a Samsung 32" HDTV)

Admittedly mine only has componant out (as well as scart) but its top quality. If you have a componant output see if that improves it at all or maybe you have another display which you can attach it to, myabe a mate or something?

By all means send it back if its faulty but from one box there is no way to tell if its the design or your specific unit or even potentially a cable problem not picked up during Sony's inhouse testing.

I have a Sony 710 dvd recorder and I am Mightily impressed with it. As a recorder I can't fault it. Recordings via Freeview to the hard drive are just as good as the original. It is far better than the Toshiba it replaced. I have a Denon 2900 DVD player for playback so I never use the Sony to playback discs. I would check to see you do not have a faulty unit.

I would ignore the HDMI hype. It might be convenient as a conector but you are still only viewing a standard definition source. The recorder will have a scaler built in but so will your screen. If you want a better scaler than the one in the screen then you will have to pay a lot more for it.

I don't think you will get a better recorder for the money you pay for a 860.
