Sometimes the most unexpected news will hit you in the oddest places. That was the case tonight as we sat merrily eating dinner with developers and journalists from around the industry at the Tengu Restaurant in Westwood, California.

We were coming from a joint Sony, Activision event there in Southern California, when we were told something we definitely weren't ready for.

The discussion at Tengu was fairly simple in its scope: various sources in the press and development team state that Sony is looking to take Rockstar “under their wings”. While we learned that any agreement Sony and Take Two entered into would not affect the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV, such an agreement would presumably affect any future releases from Rockstar, including the new franchise Sony has been discussing and L.A. Noire, which looks likely to be a PS3 exclusive at this point as well.

Rockstar, which is currently a part of Take Two Interactive, has produced several blockbuster franchises, including the Grand Theft Auto series of games, Manhunt and Bully. The studio has become famous for both the games it produces and the controversy surrounding their production. Rockstar has earned itself a reputation however as a developer which is focused on making excellent games, something that many of the studios that make up Sony World Wide Studios are known for.

As with any news this interesting, we must affirm that we trust our sources, but that our sources do not constitute an official confirmation. PSU will report back to all of you when we have more.

Sony need to fight back, so that's interesting. Don't think it's that good of an acquisition though, the only Rockstar game I have liked is Grand Theft Auto. Still, it's a good game to own.

Doesn't mean a thing if he doesn't enjoy these games, regardless of how well they were critically aclaimed.

Assuming Max Payne and Manhunt ever see further sequels, too.

Remedy made Max Payne.

Rockstar bought the rights to Max Payne, this is why a 3rd game hasn’t been made yet by remedy.

I seriously doubt sony could afford Rockstar, they must be worth billions.

I doubt they are worth that much tbh. They arueably have one of the biggest game franchises around but they only release one game from it every 2-3 years. Most of their other games sell reasonable but nothing to make them worth as much as you think.

I think despite the lower than expected demand for the PS3 so far, they made massive profits (triple) up from last year in other electrical goods like camera's etc so I guess they must still have so dosh to throw about.

I think if true its what the PS3 needs, with MS having titles like Halo & Gow etc exclusive, Sony shot themselves in the foot not signing up GTA4 as at least a timed exclusive like previous games. I never bothered playing Manhunt or Max Payne so for me GTA series would be the only plus.

Doubt it, Take two could be doing with a nice financial boost since they took a bit of a dump with the delay of GTA IV.

Would be a major coup for Sony though, and if they did do it, then IMO Sony would have probably one of the best line up of dev studios in the world.

The 3 Gta's released on the ps2 have in total of 41 millions copies then add on the millions of copies sold on the PC and Xbox plus games like table tennis, bully and manhunt, in the last few years rockstar must have sold about 50 millions games, so i would think they are worth over a billion Dollars.

o_0. You do realise that not only is a billion a THOUSAND million, that they don't get anywhere near the £30-£50 you pay for the game?

Developers get about £3-£4 of a £40 title.
