I assume the guy is around 21 years old - does he really want a family saloon?

He may not but then again if it's just a question of getting the best car for the money then it's probably better to put prejudices to one side. Picking a less desirable car for the particular demographic which has thousands of examples out there will hopefully mean that you get a better car out of it.

Yeh I will literally only have the car for a year, then sell it on once I am done with it. Obviously it would be nice to have something decent but I really am not that fussed! Like I said before a mondeo looks like it will do the job just perfectly and certainly is a lot of car for the money.

The sporty youthful car can wait until I have finished uni and have a decent income :p

The Mondeo is a hatchback. He's looking at Golfs, another popular family hatchback so it's pretty safe to say he isn't after a youthful sports car.

I concede it could be deemed a hatchback, albeit one with a small boot; not far from a saloon either.

Either way, if you're keeping it for a year only I'd get a Ford of somekind. I hear they do three variants of a hatchback theme:
Fiesta
Focus
Mondeo

It couldnt be 'deemed' a hatchback, it is one. It isn't a saloon (Well, there is a seperate saloon variant).

It's the size of a saloon car - no matter how pedantic you get over the way the boot operates.

If you're after a hatchback get a Vauxhual Zafira, they're nice for a young man. :p

Hatch/Saloon etc has nothing to do with vehicle size! You can get some very small saloons (There is a Fiesta Saloon in Europe) and some very big hatchbacks (Rover Vitesse? Modern day Audi A5?).

A hatchback is a car with a rear hatch, the boot and rear windscreen are integrated and when open give access to the passenger cabin. A flimsey removable parcel shelf seperates boot and passenger cabin. A saloon is a car with a bootlid which gives access to a seperate sealed compartment.

The Mondeo is most common as a hatchback - though it is also offered as a saloon as well but these are far less common because given the choice most people opt for the hatchback as its more practical.

One of the few things I disliked about my previous Mondeo was that it WASNT a saloon.

Secondly, the 2.0GTI is rubbish. Either get a 1.8T or don't bother getting a GTI at all.

Lmao someone educate him.

1.8T was never put in a VW Mkv GTI,why ? Because it was a pup of an engine.
The 2.0T you so put as rubbish is used in pretty much most top end VAG cars
Audi's S3, Skoda VRS, SEAT FR,
Not to mention how Clarkson clearly said the new 2.0T MKV GTI had put the fun
back into the GTI since the MK1 and how the one's in between were just poop

your going to tell me you have owned both next ?

and then i will reply and say no you haven't.

Wonderful thanks for that highly informative post about the engines in a Mark Five Golf GTI, now what about the engines in the Mark Four GTI that the OP linked to?

You know, the 1.8T and the NA 2.0 that was a complete bag of ****?

Maybe double check what you're looking at before telling people to educate themselves and making a ******* of yourself in future. Did you not think it odd that people would be discussing a Mk5 GTI with a budget of £1000?

edit - jeez, the censorship on here is getting quite silly now :/

Were you really 'Lmao ing' over a tiny bit of misinformation about an engines benefits? Think this might be a sign you need to leave the house sir!

Never realise what a serious bunch you motors lot are :D:p

This will be good.

No, it was never put in the MkV GTI because its an older engine first introduced many years before the MkV GTI was released. It had been supeceded by then.

He is clearly talking about the 114bhp 8v 2.0 engine found in the Mk4 GTI, given that the link in the first post to the car in question is to a 2000 Mk4 2.0 GTI.

your going to tell me you have owned both next ?

What a bizarre and hilarious little outburst.

Aside from the fact that you're wrong, and have already been proven so, I'm truly curious to know which browser you're using that still puts new lines at the 80th character.

i have owned both mk4 and the mk5 and the 1.8t was a pup.
i loved the mk5 it was a good solid pokey car compared the mk4.....

You seem to have become very mixed up somewhere along the line
