Sopranos ending (yes spoilers)

Just finished this.

It was good but I really didn't think it was great. I thought the dream sequences in the first couple of series (especially showing pussy as the rat) were poor. I can understand the dreams and how they are used and some might say it's fantastic writing but it didn't work for me.

However, I would say the characters are brilliant.

But The Wire > The Shield > > > > > The Sopranos

The first time I watched this I thought it was just trying to show how paranoid Tony was, that he would have to live the rest of his life on edge constantly suspecting everyone around him. When I watched it again a while ago and read other peoples comments and the articles similar to the one above I changed my mind, I think it shows that he's too confident and comfortable about his own safety, I think that the tension is built by us suspecting the people around him in the scene, we keep an eye on people in the background but Tony is oblivious, he's just waiting for his family. As a result he becomes an easy target and never even sees it coming, hence the sudden fade to black with silence.

So I just watched the first episode of series 3 on Sky Atlantic. Wow, this is such a well made program. Honestly I don't think anything like this will ever be made again.

Why on earth would you even open this thread?!?! Please, for the love of god, don't read anything in here and make sure you don't come back until you've finished watching it!!

I've seen it all already, just can't quite remember most of it, so rewatching at a slow pace :p

Just watched this, at first we were a bit  but it does kinda make sense having read the masterofsopranos blog. In the build up, we were expecting Tony to get whacked. The bloke who came in with AJ just seemed dodgy, camera focussing on him etc. Meadow was having trouble parking, and my thoughts were "she's gonna be late so will walk in to find her whole family has been executed, that's what saves her life"

The fade to black for 10s of silence definitely seems indicative of death, of nothingness, and the "you never see it coming" line from earlier has some resonance.

I also think they chose not to show him getting killed because it keeps the door open for a possible movie or whatever. If they showed his brains getting splattered all over the booth, they can't come back from that, their lead character is finished. As it stands, they could still put out a movie if they wanted because the ending is ambiguous.

A couple of things I didn't really get though:
1) Who wanted him dead? The main protagonist had been taken care of.
2) What was with Paulie turning down Tony's offer? Why and what was the significance? Maybe I missed a crucial bit of the dialogue but I didn't really buy his lines about wanting to take it easy due to health scares etc, seemed totally out of character.

Paulie turned the offer down initially because all the other guys had been killed off vito etc etc and paulie said the job was cursed ,but did you miss the bit near end outside the meat shop ? where eventually tony got him to take the job after taking the pee outta paulie after he said he saw the mother teressa in the bing lol
Carnt answer your first question as i dont know either.

there is no proof to back up anyones arguments. most use some nabs blog off internet as proof even though he states in the blog it is not fact :p

simplest answer is they didnt know what to do next with the series and made the ending . leaving a chance to re open at later date or stay closed .

That's not the simplest answer. It's not even an answer at all. David Chase has addressed the ending, and angry fans, multiple times since it ended. That, at least, gives some insight into the ending.
