Sound quality

I have a Panasonic 28" WS TV with built in speakers which have been working ok for ages. Recently, I bought a big fat DENON amp and some small sony speakers.

However, the sound quality between the two is completely different. Obviously, through the DENON it is clearer, louder and bassier, but I also feel that it is missing the mid range when compared to the TV speakers.

I'm not sure which is normal though. I use the TV for normal viewing, but the Denon for films and some programs, and after switching between the two, the Denon seems to be missing the mid range tones.

What I don't know is are the TV speakers amplifying the midrange too much, or the Denon not amplifying the midrange enough.

The Denon only has tone/base control and loads of presets, but no multichannel equaliser. I have also set the speaker size to small in the Denon.

Would larger speakers help?

Does anyone else notice this when switching between TV speakers and an external amp?

What Sony speakers are they? If you're using Sony satellite speakers from a HTIB it's possible that speakers on a TV will sound better, because they can have larger speakers, and the cabinet has bass relex port design built around it.

TV speakers are generally pretty cheap and nasty, certainly so when compared to some dedicated units. One of the implications being that TV speakers do a rather bad job with the frequency extremes.
Chances are that you're simply only used to hearing mid-range and are now getting a more complete frequency response.
