I have recently bought a Sony Blue Ray player. Nice :) Anyway, I wish to add a decent surround sound system. I don't want to pay too much, just better than what I have which is nothing :D

All the surround kits I've seen include a DVD player which seems a bit pointless as I've just bought the BR. I guess I'm just looking for a amp/speaker kit.

What do you suggest?

I suggest you start giving us a price range to work with. Frankly a lot of systems are next to useless at the bottom range and do nothing other than provide sound that comes from several directions. :)

£250-350 on speakers + sub.

Spend the other £150 on an av receiver. Search somewhere like richersounds (Dons, remove it not allowed:)) for a Sony, Onkyo, or pioneer reciever.

Or if you want something much better for a little more effort, outlay and possible 2nd hand then look at the bookshelf speakers on richer sounds (wharfedale 9.0 or the more expensive tannoy F1, or Q acoustic):

- £150 a reciever as above.
- x2 pairs Q acoustic 1010i (Front L/R + Rear L/R) = £120 http://www.richersounds.com/products/hi-fi-separates/speakers/bookshelf-speakers
- Q acoustic centre 1000ci £80 http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/3695
- 2nd hand BK gemini/xls 200 sub (£100-150) http://www.avforums.com/forums/speaker-subwoofer-classified-adverts/

FYI Quad lite 5 speaker package for £250 in London, just add sub and reciever:

FYI Q acoustic centre for ONLY £20.

Bargains to be had second hand, and much more sound per pound. Forget an all in one system of 5.1 package, piece your own together and reap the rewads!

I'm using the Onkyo 606 paired with Q Acoustics 1010i speaker package. Love it. Fantastic film response, good, clear music, if a little 'sterile'.

Listening to DIRTY dubstep tunes without issue, the sub really struggles at the very, very bottom end, but all budget subs will :)

Ant

Did you ever buy these? I'm looking at the same combination and was wondering how it turned out?
