Doesn't look big enough to be a coronal mass ejection, it's just a flare. The reason it looks dark at first is because the sun's surface and corona is a mess of tangled magnetic fields, and you sometimes get regions like that which keep the coronal plasma out. Of course it's hard to explain the exact process behind it because nobody really knows. We don't know much about the sun; if we did, we might be able to predict flares and CMEs.
