Spanish Football 2011-2012

Speaking of cards, Alves should have been booked but seemed immune to anything but fouls in his favour, Busquets for a studs up tackle in the first half, and Fabregas for that one on Pepe from behind early in the 2nd.

Anyway, Madrid could have won the game in the first half if they'd have worn the shooting boots they had in the second. That will probably hurt them more than the result. However I think this is the first time they've come back from 2-0 against this current Barca side, so they may have gotten something out of the game belief wise - they had them on the back foot for nearly all the first half and after they made their subs in the 2nd.

They still have to play them away in the league and being 5 points ahead won't feel like it's live or die so should be able to play freely, and that will probably be an even closer game over 90mins.

Maybe, but Real should have been down to half numbers too.

Madrid failed to take their chances and Barcelona made them pay. Clinical. Also; I hope Mourinho learns that you have a ~higher chance of beating Barcelona by attacking them (something that Wenger got spot on)

Mourinho knows he can't beat them on the pitch (won 1 in 12 or something like that) and understood to win the league he had to beat everyone else, not Barcelona. If Real keep their forum up, they'll win, if they drop points, Barcelona could take over the reins again.

Meh, I think if you're that good you don't need to be arrogant, what's the point. I think I just hate footballers though :p

what I see is this: Real Madrid have lost one game of any significance this season: that's their home defeat to Barca in the league. These Copa del Rey games, who really cares, they're less prestigious than the FA Cup, which most of the top sides in England don't have at the top of their priority any more.

Real are getting closer and closer to beating Barca.

Reminds me of when Mourinho got comprehensively beaten by Barca when managing Inter in the Champions league group stages...only to come back later that season and knock them out of the competition.

If Real keep cool, realise they are 5 points clear at the top of La Liga, and may end up with the Champions League, these Copa Del Rey games will be a dim and insignificant memory.

They're only arrogant (imho) on the pitch and that's due to how they play. They're very humble off the pitch.

Bull.

Go and ask a professional footballer that appearing in final's is 'insignificant', every footballer at every level wants to play in finals and win every game.

The attitude to the FA Cup and League Cup and Europa League are bought about by managers, not players, and excuses made my the media (by belittling them in comparison to the Premier League and Champions League) and up held by fans. Terrible.

Agree with all but the Europa league, its such a joke competition now. UEFA's fault, no one else's.

What? The players love travelling to Wherethe****isthatiztan on a cold Thursday night before an away game on the Sunday. That's what I heard anyway...

Madrid have played attacking against Barca in quite a few of the games, but this deja vu thing happens where they start off the better side, usually get the first goal, then either can't keep it up or slack off, both of which are fatal. I think it's only a matter of time before they pull off a convincing win though - you can see the belief is there a little more each time they play - and the results have been less about how great Barca were and more about how wasteful Madrid's shooting was.

Think Madrid will win the league, they want it more and in the toughest games have grinded out wins where as Barca have meekly submitted to a couple of draws or conceded late. Decent chance in the CL as well. Think the Copa Del Ray is the only thing Barca will win this season.

Anyone who says Ramos shouldn't be off is honest to god daft as a brush.

The replay shows without question his face rippling as his elbow crashed into him, it wasn't on purpose but it was a foul. This is ignoring the fact that Ramos was on a yellow from much earlier and did 3-4 more cynical fouls between then and the end, the one on Messi was actually last man back, if Messi hadn't gone down there was no one who would stop him having a shot.

Likewise you can quite clearly see Cesc's head(from the replay behind Cesc) snapping back(not badly) when contact is made. In the first leg Cesc had his arm near Pepe and he went down like he'd be smacked, watch the whole replay I don't actually think that particular one was on purpose but Pepe swung his arm a long way with decent speed, I laugh that people think a hand on the end of a swinging arm somehow doesn't hurt at all

Barca were rubbish though, it wasn't Real so much either, Puyol, the supposedly brilliant Pique and Abidal were all over the place all night long, Pique was just trash literally from the first second. Alves dived a bit, got fouled a bit and did quite a few fouls without getting the cards he deserved. Alonso did a raft of fouls as usual, and Granero did about 4 nasty tackles before the one that got him booked, which was a yellow for lunging and lateness rather than contact.

Pepe at the end though, should have been red, he's been an absolute disgrace in these two games, with a second stamp though he pretty much missed with this one.

Contraeo also did several nasty tackles including the first which was a scissor tackle from behind that didn't even get a card, and another cynical one left.

Good referring would probably have seen Alves off for persistent fouling, and Ramos, Pepe, Contraeo, Diarra and Alonso.

Real have no one to blame but themselves, their best chances were gifted to them and they did nothing, and for the possession and really complete crapness of Barca they created very few chances(as in Barca's defence was barely in line or on the same gameplan all night long, should have torn them a 8-2 shaped new one).

Its a contact sports. not a basketball game where a slap on the wrist gets you punished!

Funny when the Barca players surrounded the ref to send Diarra off, Casillas comes over and gives the ref space, he doesn't book Diarra, doesn't book any Barca player, but books Casillas, the only guy on the field trying to help him. Unbelievable.

It's pathetic. I did laugh quite hard at that. This isn't the first time a barca v real game has had an inconsistent ref either.

I think he didn't book Diarra largely because Messi probably wasn't going to get anywhere, it was outside the box and the first yellow was pretty harsh, between his first yellow and the possible second he let several tackles WAY worse than Diarra's(which was not malicious at all, just unlucky) which he let go unpunished, both Real and Barca tackles.

While some players can barely get booked(Song, Alonso) others can barely do anything to avoid being booked like Diarra.

Realistically that Messi foul should have been his rightful first yellow.

Casillas, it was silly, the Barca players were both right and wrong, they thought that was easily a yellow and it was, the ref didn't make the "right" decision he was helping making up for his first bad one.

The Barca players wouldn't have surrounded the ref if Diarra received his first yellow. Casillas was shoving Barca players, Barca players were surrounding the ref and backing him up but, ref's seem to allow this backing up thing in the past couple years in all the leagues.

Stand still, if a player shoves you, red card, instead they walk backwards like scared girls and encourages teams to do it.

Everyone was a bit in the wrong, Casillas got the booking largely because he was shoving Barca players rather than anything else, though someone gave him a worse shove back but out of a crowd I couldn't see who the hell it was.

SEriously though, for Real to blame the ref is laughable, as said, The Contraeo tackle was awful, no where near the ball, scissoring type tackle that is ALWAYS a yellow card, yet ignored. Alonso, Pepe did yet another stamp, Ramos had done loads of tackles he got away with and seriously the replay for the Biscuits elbow couldn't be more clear there was heavy contact. Dangerous and stupid challenge, not a purposeful elbow, but you jump up and catch someone in the face with an elbow, how often is that not a yellow?

There were positives, Arbeloa actually made a few great interceptions and looked pretty damn good going forward.... how much was helped by Pedro being awful defensively and Abidal/Puyol having a mare of a game I don't know), he only really made one big defensive error, but it also cost them a goal.

Also Ozil stood up and was counted in a "big" game for probably the first time ever, as did Benzema, though the not so go was Kaka was rubbish again, odd nice pass but, no pace, no fight, didn't step up and ultimately sucked, likewise, Pepe and Ramos can't be trusted at all, Mourinho or not they were both thugs before and since he joined. They are utterly reckless, stupid and aren't actually particularly good defenders to start with, shouldn't ever play either in big games.

Sure for Spain Ramos has been okay, he's in a less critical position and Spain are so good they've rarely been in trouble, its when under pressure and losing games Ramos gets more and more reckless. Already had two seasons before 25 where he received 3(or more) red's in a season and frankly has deserved way more.

Hmm, replay wasn't obvious, was Kaka's shot even going in before the keeper touched it?

Ronaldo assist also. Can't see anything but a Real win but you never know, still got plenty of dodgy games they can drop points and let Barca back at them but don't think this will be one.

Madrid with yet another 'concede first, but go on to win comfortably' result, teams just can't live with their attacking play once they get going. 8 points clear. Let's hope Villareal do them a favour.
